Summary: Spore doesn't start Product: Wine Version: 1.2-rc4 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dank@kegel.com
Created an attachment (id=29003) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=29003) Last 1600 lines of +relay (without heap lines) showing crash
Spore crashes on startup. Looking at +relay, it seems it's in the middle of some winhttp operation having to do with drm.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2010-06-20 00:12:12 --- This is the retail DVD version. Judging by the appdb, this seems to be a regression?

Troubling to get the same output across games: maybe we should open a new thread?

--- Comment #5 from Nicholas wnickrodgers@gmail.com 2010-07-19 10:44:00 --- Dan, were you using a trial version? My error originated from the full version of Spore, particularly the "Galactic Edition" not to be confused with the expansion called "Galactic Adventures." My version of Spore includes creature creator, evolution, sharing, exploring, but also the various stages of the game from cell stage to the space age.

--- Comment #6 from Daniel Fitzpatrick doubleagent03@gmail.com 2010-07-19 20:56:22 --- I haven't tried to install or play the game. Hopefully more posts will raise the importance of this peculiar bug and expedite resolution. Nick, can you tell us more about what you're running and the installation procedures you took? A good 'ole uname -a would be a good place to start.

--- Comment #8 from Nicholas wnickrodgers@gmail.com 2010-07-21 23:49:41 --- Here is a link to the basic specs of my computer:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4600/en/4600i/sm/specs.htm
But I upgraded to a to a GeForce 7950 GT video card with 512 MB of memory and 256 bit memory inter face (AGP 8x) and upgraded to 2.5 GB of Memory.
Wine version 1.1.42-0ubuntu4
Installation mount to /media/dvd cd /media/dvd/ wine ./Autorun.exe
Execution Wine Settings: Vista (tried a few others but same flag occurs) cd /home/wrodgers/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/SPORE/Sporebin ,/SporeApp.exe
After that it errors (refer to "Error during Spore startup" 2010-07-17)

--- Comment #9 from Daniel Fitzpatrick doubleagent03@gmail.com 2010-07-24 00:32:46 --- Made some progress.
DL wininet via winetricks, select Spore in winecfg, and under the libraries tab add the default override (native, then builtin) for winhttp & wininet. Certain distros may need to make sure they have gecko installed as well.
When running the game, these changes pop up an error when running under a normal user account, but ask me for my registration code when I run as root.
I want to solve the obvious permission issues before continuing. Any ideas?

It could be a regression, retest with 1.2 - if the problem is still present post the results of your regression test. http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

Different problem occurs. It doesn't register any error except "err:rpc:I_RpcGetBuffer no binding", then it hangs before starting the debugger.
The debugger doesn't show anything to stdout, so I assume wine either doesn't know how to handle it or, more likely, it outputs to a file somewhere. Any idea where I'd look?

I had the same problem. I corrected the problem by renaming DMCmdPortalClient.dll to DMCmdPortalClient.dll.back. The file is located in the Sporbin directory. It has worked flawlessly ever since.

--- Comment #19 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-03-14 03:23:33 CDT --- Hmm. http://www.spore.com/comm/faq mentions that there's a crash bug fixable by downloading http://www.spore.com/static/war/images/updates/DMCmdPortalClient.dll Wonder if that's related. The appdb mentions that dll, but not where to get the fixed version.
I don't have the game handy at the moment to test.
