Summary: Extreme slowdown at some points in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: Simetrical+wine@gmail.com
In an installation of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (from Steam), in some cases the game gets very slow, a fraction of an FPS. This occurs reproducibly whenever a TV is turned on in the game. This is repeatedly printed on the terminal, some dozens of times, and I imagine it's relevant:
fixme:d3d_surface:fb_copy_to_texture_direct Doing a pixel by pixel copy from the framebuffer to a texture, expect major performance issues
I haven't changed the OffscreenRenderingMode setting. In fact, the Direct3D subdirectory in Wine doesn't even exist. So it should be using the default for this, if that's relevant. I don't *recall* changing any registry keys at all for this prefix.
I'm using wine-1.1.2-307-g520ab5c from git, compiled in the standard fashion, on Ubuntu Hardy. I'm running the game with the command "padsp wine steam.exe -applaunch 2600" from the Steam directory (padsp so that sound works with PulseAudio). No other programs are installed in the prefix, only Steam and Vampire. I'm using a GeForce 7950 GT with proprietary driver version 173.14.12.
I can take any debugging steps needed, but starting the game requires five to ten minutes because I have to try repeatedly before it actually works (bug 14765).

--- Comment #1 from Simetrical Simetrical+wine@gmail.com 2008-08-15 08:41:09 --- Note, the problem disappears if I follow the HOWTO from the 1.x version of Vampire:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4949
Setting OffscreenRenderingMode=fbo fixes it. It's still a bug, I guess, just with an easy workaround, and probably the bug is well-known (that some OffscreenRenderingModes will cause this error in some cases)? I don't know what the status of this report should be.

--- Comment #2 from Jordan M smackdat1@gmail.com 2008-09-07 11:15:11 --- I was annoyed at the lag in lacroix's office (due to this bug), so I switched to fbo and restarted the game, however, upon leaving I was presented with a crash.

--- Comment #3 from Jordan M smackdat1@gmail.com 2008-09-07 11:31:08 --- on second thought, that seems to be another bug altogether, however, performance IS slow in some areas when fbo isn't in use.

--- Comment #5 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-01-20 02:39:55 --- Removing deprecated CVS/GIT version tag. Please retest in current git. If the bug is still present in today's wine, but was not present in some earlier version of wine, please update version field to earliest known version of wine that had the bug. Thanks!

--- Comment #6 from Matthew Toseland toad@amphibian.dyndns.org 2009-03-06 21:03:22 --- Same thing happens for me in Half-Life 2 at a specific point in Entanglement (involving a screen, but this is not the first one in the game). This makes it impossible to progress further without cheating to skip the level. The registry tweak mentioned fixes this. Using 1.1.16, and several versions prior.

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-09-03 12:19:38 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.29 or newer) wine?
