Summary: document is solid black during drag-select in PowerPoint 2007 Product: Wine Version: 1.1.23 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: paint007@cs.duke.edu
In PowerPoint 2007, when doing a drag-select (clicking and dragging the mouse cursor to select items on the page), the document goes solid black, making it impossible to see which objects are currently in the selection rectangle.
When run using winedbg, this fixme appears during drag-select operations, seems relevant: fixme:xrender:X11DRV_AlphaBlend Ignoring SourceConstantAlpha 176 for AC_SRC_ALPHA
Found this link to a possible patch, but have not yet installed all of the libraries necessary to build and test: http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-June/056030.html

--- Comment #1 from Ben Klopfenstein benklop@gmail.com 2009-07-05 15:22:53 --- I have tested this 1.1.24 both with and without the mentioned patch. The patch does remove the fixme: notice, but does not solve the issue.
Possibly of note: when the document goes black, there is a blue title bar at the top of it, as if the entire black area is actually a window (or a subwindow) that is supposed to be transparent but is not. Supporting this theory is the fact that, if you use KDE and have compositing and transparency enabled, the bug still occurs, but the black (sub)window is partially transparent, allowing you to still see the document underneath.

--- Comment #4 from Paul Fee pfee@talk21.com 2009-09-28 06:04:43 --- Still present with wine 1.1.30 on ubuntu 9.04.
Additionally, the drawing UI becomes unusable when performing these steps:
Create a slide with a shape (e.g. a rectangle) Select a connector (e.g. elbow connector) Move the mouse pointer near the shape.
The drawing area changes colour and the shape's handles are visible.
Most of powerpoint now becomes unusable. The connector drawing operation won't complete and other editing tasks can't be performed. Fortunately you can close the document to clear the blockage and choose to save if necessary.

--- Comment #6 from Thomas Ewald tewald@gmail.com 2009-10-22 06:36:52 --- I confirm this bug using wine 1.1.31 on Ubuntu 9.04.
Another problem is the difference of the shape position/size in "preview" mode ( with the black screen ) and the final position after mouse release. There is a little offset the size of the title bar of the window.

I agree these are the same bug, but I think the summary of this bug is a more accurate description of the problem. The black background occurs with any click-drag action, not just inserting shapes. And I can confirm comment #4, that for some shapes (only line shapes, from what I've tested), the editor becomes unresponsive, the black does not go away when you release the mouse button, and the line is not drawn at all. However, it is not necessary to close Powerpoint to clear it--navigating forward or back one slide and then returning to that slide will refresh it.
Still present in 1.1.37.

--- Comment #15 from chope elchope@gmail.com 2010-11-25 18:32:09 CST --- It seems to be a transparent window, with compiz enabled (System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->Extra in Ubuntu 9.10) the screen doesn't go black, but shades in a tone of gray.
Furthermore, the arrow issue only happens if, after selecting the arrow tool, you hover the mouse over a text box. In a blank slide it works fine.
Good luck!

--- Comment #16 from Paul Fee pfee@talk21.com 2010-11-26 04:22:07 CST --- Tested on Fedora 14 with Wine 1.3.7.
Tried using elbow connector between two rectangles. Slide drawing area goes black once mouse pointer moves near an existing object.
However, PowerPoint does not lock up, switching between slides restores GUI.
Elbow connector can be used if first placed on a blank part of the slide. Then separately move the endpoints to connect it to other objects.
Not perfect yet, but a big improvement over Wine 1.1.30 and quite usable now.
Thanks, Paul
