--- Comment #2 from piwacet davrosmeglos@gmail.com 2010-09-10 01:47:01 CDT --- Can you say the steps to reproduce this? I haven't been able to reproduce this with wine 1.3.2 and DPP 3.8.1.
Thanks.

Can you say the steps to reproduce this? I haven't been able to reproduce this with wine 1.3.2 and DPP 3.8.1.
Thanks.
1. Start DPP Viewer (the "main" window with all the thumbnails). 2. Right-click on an image. 3. Select "Info" (last menu item).
I'll re-test with Wine 1.3.2 as soon as a build shows up in the Fedora Koji.

--- Comment #4 from piwacet davrosmeglos@gmail.com 2010-09-10 02:23:12 CDT --- Thanks.
I really haven't been able to reproduce this. I'm running DPP 3.8.1, on gentoo, with wine 1.3.2, with the standard gentoo-provided package, with the exception that the following additional patch is applied:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2010-August/092661.html
(Which I use because it solves bug # 17764 & 12001 for me).
I'm not sure if Gentoo is using vanilla source, or if it applies it's own patches, but I could likely easily look into this.
Also, I could try the vanilla gentoo package without the above mentioned patch if that is helpful.

--- Comment #5 from Lukas Jirkovsky l.jirkovsky@gmail.com 2010-09-10 02:29:22 CDT --- I still see it with wine 1.3.2 on Arch Linux

--- Comment #6 from James theholyettlz@googlemail.com 2010-10-09 17:51:38 CDT --- Still present in Wine 1.3.4.

--- Comment #7 from Jon Wickström jontesreklampost@arrak.fi 2010-11-09 03:10:35 CST --- I have Ubuntu 10.04 and Wine 1.3.6 and can reproduce it.
The quickcheck tool (Tools -> Start Quick check tool) has an "Image information" button which triggers the same behaviour. The Quick check tool is launched as a separate exe. The image info error seems to halt both DPPViewer.exe and DPPTrimmer.exe regardless of which one the image info was triggered from.

--- Comment #8 from piwacet davrosmeglos@gmail.com 2010-11-09 18:46:54 CST --- I gave this a try in Ubuntu under Virtualbox to see if it was related to the distribution, and I still can not reproduce it. I'm really not sure why. My one thought is that it may be related to the way I install DPP.
I own a copy of Windows XP which I run in Virtualbox, and I install/update the DPP software in this, and then copy the 'Program Files/Canon' directory from the virtualbox/windows setup to my wine directory to get the executables and related files, without having to go through the "DPP updater crashing" bug that wine has. Perhaps there is something about this process that prevents the bug others are experiencing?
It was not hard to test the above configuration if others want to try to reproduce my setup:
Virtualbox (binary version) 3.2.10 with guest additions installed Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit (running in above virtualbox) Ubuntu's wine 1.3.6 package (1.3.6-0ubuntu1-maverickppa1) without any patching DPP 3.9.2

I gave this a try in Ubuntu under Virtualbox to see if it was related to the distribution, and I still can not reproduce it.
I can confirm this on Fedora 14, wine-1.3.6-1.fc14.i686, DPP 3.9.2.0. How weird... the Info box works fine when I install DPP on a Windows XP VM, and then copy C:\Program Files\Canon\Digital Photo Professional over my current, working DPP 3.7.2.0 Wine install.

--- Comment #10 from piwacet davrosmeglos@gmail.com 2010-11-11 22:47:35 CST --- So I installed a second copy of Ubuntu in Virtualbox (identical set-up as in comment number 8) and in this virtual Ubuntu I installed DPP according to the suggested process on wine's website, with the whole updater-crashing and cabextract-some-files procedure. Indeed, in this setup, the program crashes when I try to view the info box.
Comparing the Program Files/Canon/ directories from the working copy in Ubuntu (created by copying over the files from a proper install in windows XP) and the crashing version in the second copy of ubuntu yields:
diff -rq crash/ work/ Only in work/Canon/Digital Photo Professional: PspropSt.dll Only in work/Canon/Digital Photo Professional: rcPropSt.dll Files crash/Canon/Digital Photo Professional/Uninst.ini and work/Canon/Digital Photo Professional/Uninst.ini differ
And, copying over both of these files (PspropSt.dll, rcPropSt.dll), (but not just one or the other) into the crashing version causes things to work -i.e, the bug is no longer present.
In other words, the installation procedure on wine's website, which circumvents the "DPP Updater Crashing" bug, apparently fails to install these two files, and leads to this bug.
So this "bug" would actually not exist if there was a fix for:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16817
Or some other way of getting the installation process to install these two files.

--- Comment #11 from piwacet davrosmeglos@gmail.com 2010-11-12 18:22:31 CST --- It seems that if one follows wine's installation guide but also does something like the following:
cabextract -d "$INSTALL_DIR" "$SOURCE_DIR/INST/Image Handling Library/ENGLISH/IHL_LANG.CAB"
It will give you the two missing files:
~/CanonUPW_000/INST/Image Handling Library/ENGLISH$ cabextract IHL_LANG.CAB Extracting cabinet: IHL_LANG.CAB extracting PspropSt.dll extracting rcPropSt.dll
I have not tested this method yet, but I'll give it a go soon.

--- Comment #12 from Lukas Jirkovsky l.jirkovsky@gmail.com 2010-11-13 03:47:28 CST --- piwacet: thank you very much for your work! I'll update the installation HOW-TO with your findings.
I guess this bug report should be closed then because it's a bug in installation instructions rather than bug in wine.

Will do. DPP also crashes in Windows X when these DLLs are removed.
