--- Comment #2 from Saellaven saellaven@gmail.com 2008-07-31 17:10:03 --- I've got ALSA installed with OSS emulation enabled. I've got wine set to use ALSA since Diablo 2 via battle.net would make me disconnect due to sound lag using ALSA (I should try ALSA for that again, it's been a while)
Video card is a GF7600GT with version 173.14.09 of the binary drivers.
For what it's worth, I've got a dozen hours in the last week logged with Diablo 2 via Wine on the same box without any problems.

--- Comment #3 from Saellaven saellaven@gmail.com 2008-07-31 17:14:03 --- I just switched to ALSA in winecfg and it produces an identical page fault
$ wine Stronghold2.exe ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:935:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x83e58955 at address 0x36eecc8 (thread 0009), starting debugger... --- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-02-02 16:32:38 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.14 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #5 from Saellaven saellaven@gmail.com 2009-02-02 17:40:22 --- yes
wine 1.1.14
wine Stronghold2.exe wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x83e58955 at address 0x36eecc8 (thread 0009), starting debugger... Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x83e58955 in 32-bit code (0x036eecc8).
I'm figuring it is probably related to securom.

--- Comment #6 from NSLW lukasz.wojnilowicz@gmail.com 2009-06-19 01:44:51 --- This problem can be solved by overriding d3dx9_36.dll on Wine-1.1.23 and Stronghold 2 patched to 1.4.1. I haven't got Stronghold 2 Deluxe however.

For me it's fixed on Wine 1.2-rc2 without any extra winetrics components.

I think it's problem with audio. If I uncheck all audio in winecfg then the game starts fine but without audio. If I check anything in audio tab in winecfg e.g. Alsa then game fails to start after Firefly logo.

--- Comment #12 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2010-08-23 14:14:31 --- If you try the game with a more recent version of Wine (e.g. 1.3.1) you can spot the following line in the terminal which clearly indicates the problem:
'err:winediag:FILE_CreateFile Too many open files, ulimit -n probably needs to be increased'
You need to increase the value of the max. opened files (file descriptors) in Linux. I added the following soft/hard limits to /etc/security/limits.conf: my_user soft nofile 1024 my_user hard nofile 10000
This did the trick and the game is playable now.
Fedora 13 1.4.1 version of the game
Please re-test the game using the mentioned modification to ulimit.

I forgot to mention: I also had to add the following line to /etc/pam.d/login: session required pam_limits.so
