Summary: mcm2: graphical glitches and extreme lag while in menu Product: Wine Version: 1.1.14 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: hoehle@users.sourceforge.net
Both the demo and the retail version of Motocross Madness 2 suffer from an extreme lag in mouse movement while in the application's menu. The screen reacts as if there were only one refresh every two seconds. The mouse is jerky. OTOH, during game play, FPS and responsiveness seem normal (from what I can tell from just a little testing).
The menu graphics are mostly correct, with these anomalities:
- There is no refresh, i.e. if anoyther window shadows part of it, the region becomes black. More precisely, when the mouse if moved over those black areas, a tiny rectangle the size of the mouse pointer is restored. Clickable icons are restored in full as the mouse hovers over them.
- Each time the mouse passes over one of the buttons in the main menu (with the chains), the whole background screen darkens. I don't know whether this is normal for lack of comparison with MS-Windows. However, the mouse moving over the background restores it to the original, lighter tune.
- More precisely, mouse movement is fine in the menu until it passes over one clickable area. Then it stops for a second. After that, the button and tooltip appear highlighted / refreshed. Switching from one menu to another causes like a 5 second lag until the mouse moves again, even though the new screen is displayed somewhat earlier.
- In Ubuntu Hardy, unlike Intrepid, there are major graphical glitches in the display (see screenshot): More and more black horizontal lines cover the display each time the mouse moves over one of these buttons. (With wine-1.0.1 colored vertical lines are randomly displayed instead). In Ubuntu Intrepid, this does not happen. Hmm, might be gone since 1.1.14, I just saw only a single erroneous line today.
- The application manages to limit the mouse to its window even though my setting in winecfg ought to disable this behaviour. fixme:dinput:SysMouseAImpl_Acquire Clipping cursor to (0,0)-(112,27) is the logline accompanying this behaviour (which some other applications also exhibit). Using Alt-Tab *and* wild mouse movements it typically can escape.

The screenshot shows the random black horizontal lines, the tiny rectangular updates where the mouse passed by, drawn in lighter tune than the darkened background, and a large black area caused by the snapshot tool and lack of refresh.

The default log is almost empty and shows nothing that I wouldn't have seen already in applications working well.
I forgot to mention than not all buttons cause a delay in mouse movement. The small square arrow buttons visible in some menus highlight but cause no delay.

--- Comment #3 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2009-02-03 11:41:22 --- On 2008-10-28 in AppDB, EA Durbin rated this app (the downloadable demo version) with platinum using wine-0.9.48. I checked out this release and observe the exact same lag in the menus mentioned above, as well as colored vertical lines and even more glitches: large black vertical stripes in the menu. So maybe there's a driver issue involved? It's not a regression vs. 0.9.48 as far as I can tell. I'm using the XOrg Intel driver in (K)Ubuntu.

--- Comment #4 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2009-02-03 12:09:33 --- THe lag of mous is a well-known bug. It will be fixed when xorg release its next next version ....
With a nvidia card, I do not have any graphical glitches.
The lag of mouse is quite annoying but it does not prevent the gameplay. Maybe, gold would be a better rate, wouldn't be?

--- Comment #5 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2009-05-25 07:55:22 --- Here are results for Motocross Madness 2 Demo with a complete different HW and SW setup: NVidia MacOS instead of formerly Intel-Xorg on Linux.
There's still a slight delay when moving over buttons (as noted in comment #0), but it's less disturbing than observed on the less powerful Linux machine (no dual core, less GHz).
OTOH, switching menu screens still causes the app to hang for a few of seconds.
Another effect I described in comment #0, namely that the background colour changes slightly where the mouse pointer moves, is only present when the display is currently flipped (see bug #18615 about this screen flip issue).
The race itself runs fine, as with the Intel graphics driver.

The screenshot shows a spurious horizontal line (it looks like an off by 1 error) that reveals content from the previous screen. It was shot in wine-1.1.22 on an Intel Xorg video driver on Ubuntu, but I had the same picture with NVidia 9400 on MacOSX. Please compare this to the similar screenshot at http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?iId=14073 in AppDB which shows no such ruler. It disappears when the mouse hovers over it.
BTW, The CPU climbs to 100% in the menus, not during race! I believe this lag issue also causes the extremely slow 1 FPS (on the Intel) VCR race replay function, since a menu area is drawn at the bottom of the screen.

--- Comment #7 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2009-06-17 16:00:35 --- Today, with wine-1.1.23 on the nVidia Mac mini, investigating bug #18615 I was surprised for some minutes. In Motocross Madness 2 Demo, there was absolutely no mouse lag when hovering over the buttons. However, there was a second, old-style mouse b&w pointer at the center of the screen -- for some time only! The regular mouse pointer (grey, with shadow) was the one that moved around. The old-style one was fixed at the center of the screen *except* when the regular mouse moved over or clicked a button, in which case it jumped by a few pixel, before returning slowly to the center. So there's a connection with those mouse-warping bugs. Later, or starting the demo anew, this extra mouse pointer was never seen again. Go figure.
Using Mac OS X 10.5.7, XQuartz 2.3.3.1 and compiled wine myself without Fink or Macports.
As mentioned in bug #18956, for 1.1.23, you need backbuffer instead of fbo with MCM2 on the Mac: HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D "OffscreenRenderingMode"="backbuffer"

--- Comment #8 from Fernando Martins fernando@cmartins.nl 2011-06-26 05:45:23 CDT --- I just tested the demo against 1.3.22 and there is no lagging. The only issue is the double cursor which keeps static during the menu phase and disappears in game.
