Summary: Microsoft Pinball Arcade missing some color depth Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc1 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: vanessaezekowitz@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=13032) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13032) Screenshot of the game as it appeares in 8bpp "StaticColor" mode
In a real Windows installation (either on the real hardware or within vmware), MS Pinball Arcade looks normal, but when running under Wine/Linux in an Xorg 8bpp StaticColor visual, it looks like some color depth is being lost, almost like 7 bits per pixel. This affects all parts of the game - intro screens, the menu, ,loading screens, and game tables.
If you switch to a StaticGray visual, you get what looks like a full 256-greys screen. Brightness transitions are smoother (e.g. finer steps and banding) than their StaticColor counterparts.
In the screenshots, it is probably easiest to see the difference between the two visuals along the edges of the table and in the ball launch trough on the right.
Expected Results: The game should look exactly like it does in Windows.
Affected Versions: All recent versions up through 1.0 rc1. I can't be sure when this started, I've only been using Wine since around 0.9.31.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-11-12 14:28:54 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.8 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #4 from Vanessa Ezekowitz vanessaezekowitz@gmail.com 2008-11-14 16:28:14 --- Something unrelated to WINE has corrupted the install of MS Pinball that we were using, or at least has rendered it unplayable. It will take a few months to be able to retrieve the install media from storage (1300 miles away), so this report will have to kinda "hang" for a while until I can re-install the game.

--- Comment #6 from Vanessa Ezekowitz vanessaezekowitz@gmail.com 2009-05-18 17:39:35 --- Yep, still the same with 1.1.21. The game looks identical to the "StaticColor" screenshot above.

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-11-19 11:31:56 --- Perhaps Roderick's libxrender work has helped this? Can you retry in 1.1.33 or newer wine?

--- Comment #8 from Vanessa Ezekowitz vanessaezekowitz@gmail.com 2009-11-19 14:33:48 --- Ok, I've added the WINE Ubuntu repository ( http://www.winehq.org/download/deb ) for Karmic Koala, and brought in 1.1.33. I'm afraid this has made things far worse.
Now, all of the intro, menu, and loading screens are in shades of white with very few colors - almost like someone's run the screens through a brightness and contrast filter and turned both all the way up. Further, at the point where I should see the game table, the screen is actually blanked out - there is no visible content at all.
Wine is now throwing errors like crazy (actually the same error message repeated over and over), producing far more output than my terminal can capture (and for some reason, wine blah.exe 2>&1 >file.txt isn't enough to capture the output). I've saved what I could, and will attach it.
If I instead try commenting out the 'Visual "StaticColor"' bit from my xorg.conf , and run the game in 8bpp mode with the default visual (which I assume is PseudoColor), I get poor results - almost no color at all, and only the brightest stuff is even visible - I've seen this before in older versions of WINE.
If I try to run the game in my normal 24bpp session, I get the exact same results as in bug #13198 .
Removing ~/.wine (and subsequently rerunning `winecfg` and recreating my Drive-C symlink) did not help. In fact, I had to do this again when I downgraded back to the official Karmic package (1.0.1), as not doing so caused WINE to crash.
I have my original game CD again, and I'd be glad to make a copy or two of it available for testing and debugging purposes, in observance of the US's fair use guidelines.

--- Comment #13 from Vanessa Ezekowitz vanessaezekowitz@gmail.com 2010-05-19 18:04:45 --- Recent versions of WINE have had many troubles with this game. Anything over 1.1.25 does one of the following, depending on which version we tried (always with the same build settings, and always displayed on a second X session with an 8bpp "StaticColor" visual):
* Crashes WINE outright at game start * Crashes WINE when you pull the plunger back to launch a ball * Displays a black screen (on the 8bpp visual that is) * Displays the game screen but with garbled colors * Causes the game to exit back to the table select menu when the table is finished, instead of asking for another quarter as usual.
We probably should have made up some kind of version-vs-problem log, but as I recall, 1.1.26 and several versions newer had the problem with the quarter/end-of-table, while 1.1.44 displayed garbled colors.
At any rate, we've masked it back to 1.1.25, which is the highest numbered version we've found that shows none of the above issues; it is the most recent one which is fully usable with this particular game.
That aside, every version higher than that which *did* display a non-black, non-garbled screen still showed the apparent 7bpp depth.
