Summary: Pendulumania: Game crashes immediately Product: Wine Version: 1.1.27 Platform: PC URL: http://www.pcgaming.ws/viewgame.php?game=pendulumania OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: carlton.hobbs@gmail.com
This is a 9 year old game that runs fine on WinXP, though predates XP, and I've not got any version of wine to run it, though I've occasionally tried over the past 3 years starting with about 0.9.30. So the D3D errors in the output below must be very old Wine D3D errors.
It is a very worthwhile freeware game, given the age, hopefully a simple fix? I'm an accountant, if I could program I'd try to help. Note that the initial text buttons that appear after starting PMania.exe also just have question marks on Windows XP, I presume because I don't have a Japanese font installed. That shouldn't matter as the game runs fine on WinXP when you click the top button.

--- Comment #1 from Jeff Zaroyko jeffz@jeffz.name 2009-08-15 01:29:03 --- if it crashes where is the backtrace? I tested it here on Ubuntu 8.04 with nvidia 8800 190.18, it runs, music plays, something is drawn on the screen but quickly disappears then the rest of the time it's just a black screen.

--- Comment #2 from Carlton Hobbs carlton.hobbs@gmail.com 2009-08-15 10:49:09 --- I'm looking through the Wine documentation trying to find how to get a backtrace. Do you know where simple directions are? The output I listed was all I got. I did have the screen go black also but then the program immediately quit with no sound. I can try on another PC with Nvidia and Ubuntu.

I used this format from the FAQ: WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh,+tid wine your_program.exe &> /tmp/output.txt
Also, it is not "crashing" like it first did, but is drawing a black screen and you eventually hear some sounds, but the escape key will close the program.

--- Comment #7 from Carlton Hobbs carlton.hobbs@gmail.com 2009-08-15 14:37:46 --- Playing on Windows 7 fails with a warning that D3DRM.DLL is missing. Searching in Wine for that, I see that it is bug 8232 and has lots of old duplicate bugs for the past 2 years. So I tried to copy that DLL over from WinXP, but that does not change anything, still a black screen.
I tried it on Ubuntu 8.04 with Nvidia proprietary driver and it never crashes, just has a black screen but gives the additional error:
fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8
From a search on that, I guess that the main problem is 5 year old existing
major bug 2082, or possibly bug 1347.
Back to the original crash issue, I think that must be related to the open source ATI driver.

--- Comment #23 from Rafal Stanilewicz washuu@eastnews.com.pl 2012-03-06 04:32:38 CST --- I have wine 1.4-rc6, Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and integrated Intel graphics.
I downloaded Pendulumania from http://www.acid-play.com/getfile/303/11367 because for me the original URL was not working.
When I run PMania.exe, I see question marks on buttons. When I click first one, game runs, but with totally garbled colors and graphics, and I see on console hundreds of messages:
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_cpu_blt Filter WINED3D_TEXF_LINEAR not supported in software blit. err:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette This code should never get entered for DirectDraw!, expect problems fixme:d3d_surface:surface_cpu_blt Filter WINED3D_TEXF_LINEAR not supported in software blit. err:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette This code should never get entered for DirectDraw!, expect problems

--- Comment #24 from Carlton Hobbs carlton.hobbs@gmail.com 2012-03-16 11:04:41 CDT --- @Rafal,
I used the download from that website on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 Beta and Wine 1.4. That is the same download, and I still get the same problems and error messages as you received. Also, once it blanks the screen, you can just hit ESC to quit and close the program, and that part works. But it also gives one final error message when doing so:
err:wgl:internal_SetPixelFormat Invalid operation on root_window

The original problem was about a crash, that seems fixed at least. I can reproduce the original problem in wine 1.2.3 but not in wine 1.6-rc5.
But I'm getting psychedelic colors in wine 1.6-rc5 (both fullscreen and emulated desktop), there is an endless loop of:
fixme:d3d_surface:surface_cpu_blt Filter WINED3D_TEXF_LINEAR not supported in software blit. fixme:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette No palette set.
Can anyone retest? It's a 700kb download. If no one test I'll mark fixed in a few days.

--- Comment #26 from Carlton Hobbs carlton.hobbs@gmail.com 2013-07-15 20:19:37 CDT --- I just tested with 1.6rc4 on Ubuntu 13.04, 64-bit, and I'm having the same "crash" (I'm not sure if that is the best word) that I"ve had for the last several years in Wine. It resets the display so most of my screen is an artifact with the mouse and control only over a ~640x480 box of the upper left corner of the screen. I can get Pendulumania to exit by hitting escape, but yes, before exiting it has had crazy colors. And after I hit escape, I can't fix the desktop short of a hard power off.
