Are you an administrator on Windows XP?

Yup. Is that the cause?
Well, that's the behavior I see on Windows. However, wine reports the user is an administrator, so while there may be a firefox bug, there's also a wine bug.

What you're seeing on Windows is a Firefox bug.
What you see on Wine is a Wine bug.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |archimedes1@ymail.com
--- Comment #12 from P Macko archimedes1@ymail.com 2009-04-19 01:24:54 --- I've encountered this problem with Internet Explorer 6 as well as the Windows version of Firefox 3.0.5 on Wine 1.1.18. Setting either browser to be the default doesn't work for me. So I get "Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?" or "Firefox is not currently set as your default browser Would you like to make it your default browser?" pop up boxes depending on which browser I'm starting up for the first time. Running "wine winebrowser http://bugs.winehq.org" followed by a "ps x" shows that Wine ignored the attempts to change the default browser and instead continually attempts to use the linux version of Firefox instead which inexplicably fails to open up a browser window on my system (although it works fine outside of wine).

--- Comment #13 from P Macko archimedes1@ymail.com 2009-04-19 01:39:00 ---
I'd like to clarify my previous comment. When I said that I get the "not the default browser" messages when I start up either browser the "first time", I meant that the message appears whenever I open up a browser window when that browser isn't already running.

For uTorrent, it asks to be the default torrent handler on startup. Choose yes, close, restart. Guess what happens next? :-p

--- Comment #18 from André H. nerv@dawncrow.de 2010-09-26 11:12:09 CDT --- i got the problem here: Firefox searches its prefs in hkcr. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes should exist and be merged into HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT since NT, with prior to the user classes(says msdn). see also the function RegOpenUserClassesRoot, it should be tested, implemented and used by the other regfunctions. I'll write tests and start implementing the function when i get time to.
You can test that by manually copying the user classes to hkcr after installing firefox

I would like to start the work right now. While I tried to run the tests in windows step by step, I found something that may be confusing.
advapi32/tests/registry.c:2173 delete_key( hkey ); This did not delete the key without KEY_ENUMERATE_SUB_KEYS access mask. But if it did deleted the key, the tests following will not work as expected.
advapi32/tests/registry.c:2256 /* check that the value is overwritten in hklm and user's classes */ But the following codes checks hkcr instead of hklm.
Would you mind if I'll have some ideas to improve these and extends some new tests? Thank you.

did you had a look at how delete_key works? i'm not sure if i understand you correctly.

Oh, true. this is a little fix if it still works then. be free to send a patch for this.
