https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657255 suggests that this error happens when X calls are made from multiple threads without proper protection.
Does 'taskset -c 1 wine ...' work around the problem? What CPU do you have?

Thanks for that. I looked into task set.
using -c 1 kinda made the game choppy, so I went ahead and used -c 0,1 (my system has 2 processors with 4 threads in total).
It works well so I'm closing the bug. Should I file a bug against X though?
