Bug ID: 45287 Summary: Chessbase 11 fails to play media Product: Wine Version: 3.9 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk Distribution: ---
Running chessbase 11 with Fritz Trainer media (in this case Winning With The Ruy Lopez Vol 2) opening the media (via DVD) and clicking on the media gives the following:

Related (but a different issue) is that some media (not this one) requires an activation key which will require https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41350 to be fixed.

--- Comment #1 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- Trying this again I get something different now (4.19):
0009:fixme:msctf:InputProcessorProfileMgr_GetActiveProfile (03CCDDD0)->({34745c63-b2f0-4784-8b67-5e12c8701a31} 0032F500)
is mostly what is spammed when trying to play one of the videos.
I've uploaded a log of fixmes from the point of opening the database (goes to the contents page) and then trying to click on the videos.

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45287
--- Comment #4 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- I also need to test that the videos play when chessbase itself is not activated (on Windows) to make sure this isn't related to the problem of not being able to activate. I'll try this soon.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45287
--- Comment #5 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- Confirmed it works on Windows with an unregistered instance, so likely a wine issue.

--- Comment #6 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- Does the bug still occur with wine-6.19?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45287
--- Comment #7 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- I'll try to give it a retest. IIRC the latest errors (maybe around 6.0) gave issues with the codecs (I think I had to open the media directly with chessbase rather than the click through page - so maybe this needs splitting into two bugs).
For the media issue it could be the way wine is compiled as I'm using the openSuSE rpms (i.e. commercial codec issues). Unfortunately when I've tried to compile wine myself lately it wouldn't work with any display. I've upgraded to the latest openSuSE in the meantime so I could try a recompile. If that fails I may need some help getting the compiled version working. At least it would distinguish between something lacking in wine, and how it's compiled.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45287
--- Comment #8 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- Confirming this is still a problem as of wine 7.1
0024:fixme:ieframe:ControlSite_OnFocus (06BAED88)->(1)
is all that happens now if I try to click on the introduction picture (should open media), however the a log similar to the original is output when actually opening the title html page of the database, so nothing may have changed.
The other issue with playing media is a problem with gstreamer and the codec which will likely be run into when the media does try to play (there is a way to directly play media which bypasses the html page) which as mentioned above could be down to how it is compiled for openSuSE. In version 6, I was not able to compile a working version so as to test that theory.
Again happy to split this into two bugs. Also happy to go through a screenshare on zoom or similar some time to demonstrate the bug(s) vs a working on a windows installation.

Eg.:
sh winetricks ie6 gecko wmp10

--- Comment #10 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- Running without winetricks gives me a disabled pop up followed by a crash notification:
(could this be caused by opensuse builds not wanting to bundle the right codecs?) - note on ChessBase Reader 2017 the player opens but FIXME: WMP is displayed.

--- Comment #11 from Bartosz gang65@poczta.onet.pl --- Please try to install/use native DLLs, and check which DLLs override, fixes this issue. It will help to assign component to the bug report.

--- Comment #12 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- ie6 and wmp10 do not work on wine 64 bit prefixes. Chessbase does not install in 32 bit wine architecture.

--- Comment #13 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- I suggest we try to make it work properly on CBReader14 which can be downloaded, perhaps a side effect will be it will work for CBase11. Again there is the possibility that the opensuse builds might not correctly support media, and I had no luck making wine work from a self-build previously.

--- Comment #14 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- On CBReader14, as well as not displaying the html images correctly when you open the database the media is in (not a problem on ChessBase11), in the logs there is:
winegstreamer error: decodebin1: Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in. winegstreamer error: decodebin1: gstdecodebin2.c(4679): gst_decode_bin_expose (): /GstBin:bin1/GstDecodeBin:decodebin1: no suitable plugins found: Missing decoder: Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) (video/x-ms-asf)

--- Comment #15 from Bartosz gang65@poczta.onet.pl --- Hi David, you are missing gstreamer ugly plugin: https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/documentation/asf/index.html?gi-language=c
Try to install corresponding package. On Ubuntu it will be:
gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly
Most propably you will need also 32bit version of this codec.

--- Comment #16 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- I suspect that is part of the problem. I've noticed that Packman doesn't distribute the 32 bit gstreamer codecs for released OpenSuSE version.
I've mailed them to see if they will consider adding the 32bit codecs.
Note that the newer Fritz Trainer media is mp4, though on trying to open that (the button doesn't work with a mouse click, but enter does) it complains the media doesn't seem to be mp4 and trying to attempt to play it causes a crash (which might be wine, media player or codecs).
I've sent a support request to Chessbase to see if there is any test media which the wine devs could access so it can be tested. It might run into the wall of we don't support linux, it might not, let's see.

--- Comment #17 from David dav75uk@yahoo.co.uk --- Indeed, they won't support it. A grey area would be to replace the video with generic video and replace the data with other data (the data format for the games and database has already been reverse engineered) - or does not contain any data which is not copyrightable normally (such as a game score or moves leading to a well known position which doesn't contain any analysis). In that way you'd have something that runs on ChessBaseReader but doesn't contain any of the sensitive copyright bits. It depends whether one considers that as for providing interoperability, or runs the risk of a lawyer noting that all the data is copyright even if it's now generic.
