Yes, same thing happens in the demo.
Works here, with wine-1.3.24-97-g340643a OpenGL renderer string: GeForce GTX 295/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 3.3.0 NVIDIA 270.41.19

However, apart from occasional problems when the keyboard stops working, which is possibly bug 22999, bug 29010 or bug 30583, the game runs fine for me (without virtual desktop mode) with wine 1.5.0.

It could be that that resolution is not configured in your xorg.conf..
