Summary: Need for Speed World needs native d3dx9_43 and d3dcompiler_43 (purist) Product: Wine Version: 1.3.19 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3dx9 AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dank@kegel.com CC: wine-bugs@winehq.org
The game runs fine as installed (at 1024x768 or lower), but setting d3dx9_43.dll or d3dcompiler_43.dll to builtin results in crashes or black screens.

--- Comment #1 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2011-10-30 07:22:03 CDT --- Steam version of LIMBO game also require both native d3dx9_43.dll and native d3dcompiler_43.dll. Trying to use native d3dx9_43.dll + builtin d3dcompiler_43.dll makes game fail at start complaining about "Vertex shader error" (same error as when trying to run the game without native dlls overrides). Having only native d3dcompiler_43.dll and builtin d3dx9_43.dll results in game crash at startup.
Installing both native d3dx9_43.dll and d3dcompiler_43.dll fixes the problem and allows the game to work flawlessly.
I don't see a point in reporting a separate bug about DirectX *_43.dll for LIMBO as it is a general deficiency in Wines' DirectX9 implementation that affects a broad range of apps (two are known so far: NFS:World and LIMBO).

--- Comment #2 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2012-05-28 00:18:53 CDT --- Looks like in Wine 1.5.5 built-in implementation of d3dx9_XX had been fixed to a state when Limbo could start up and produce a properly rendered picture when using built-in d3dx9_43.dll and native d3dcompiler_43.dll combo.
Having both dlls set to use built-in libs no longer results in "Vertex shader error" message, instead the game starts up and seems to be working correctly but does not render anything (I can hear in-game sounds and navigating in-game menu blindly also seems to work). Logs shows a lot of fixmes, mostly related to stubbed procs in d3dcompiler_43.dll. Just the same behavior happens with native d3dx9_43.dll (or native d3dx9_36.dll) and built-in d3dcompiller_43.dll.
Having both dlls set to native works OK just as it had always been.
Dan, maybe it's time to re-test NFS:World to check if something had improved recently?

Presumably still blocked.

If I read comment 2 correctly, there was some improvement for Limbo the last time it was tested, but it still wasn't fully fixed. That was 3 years ago; what is the current state?

Since the free downlaod is dead and no response for 3 years. I would close this bug. There are other compiler bugs open that most likely expose the same issues.
Also this bug has no log to start working with.

I tested the game with vanilla Wine 1.9.18 on a clean 32-bit Wineprefix on Gentoo (64-bit). Test hardware/driver: Nvidia Geforce 970M and proprietary driver version 370.23.
Only Steam & Limbo installed. I removed the bundled (Limbo) DirectX installer.
I can't reproduce this bug any more. Seems to run flawlessly for me!

I spoke to soon! Sorry forgot to update. The issue appears to depend on what section of the game is being reloaded (Steam Cloud save). I had no issues the first play through - then after that the crash reproduceably occurred right at startup.
I needed:
winetricks d3dcompiler_43 d3dx9_43
to workaround the issue still. That was with vanilla Wine 1.9.18 (as per comment 7).
