Confirming that the game crashes at start, but not sure that the fourcc: ATOC has anything to do with it. The exclusive sneak peek from last week says it too, but still works.
On me it also gets a bit further, and then crashes to a page fault on read access to 0x00000001.

Well, ATOC is unsupported, but it shouldn't be fatal. Honestly, I doubt it has anything to do with the problem. The line "fixme:d3d_texture:texture_init Failed to create surface 0x6aee0100, hr 0x8876086c" may be related though, and you'll probably want a log with something like +d3d9,+d3d,+seh,+tid for that.

I get the same error as Joachim when starting Giana Sisters. As suggested by Henri I've captured a log with WINEDEBUG=+d3d9,+d3d,+seh,+tid and attached it. I hope this helps.

I have exactly the same problem as Rixa @ comment 12:
Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000001 at address 0x10087ce5 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
which is reproducible. FWIW, I attached the last 4000 lines of the debug log with WINEDEBUG=+relay
The unhandled page fault is at line 3101 in Kernel32.dll as it seems.

--- Comment #18 from Mateusz Stachowski mateusz.stachowski@wp.pl 2012-10-27 11:56:47 CDT --- I have the game running. I'm suprised that nobody else figured it out before because atleast in two logs attached to the bug report are fixmes for wmvcore which is the problem.
The game stops in the moment where it should display Black Forest Games logo and this file is a Windows Media Video (BFG Logo 1080p.wmv).
You need to install WMP9 or 10 through winetricks and that's besides the xact_jun2010 which just like in the case of Pulic Demo should be installed in the wineprefix before the installation of the game (or you could force it afterwards).
I'm pleased to tell you that the full game runs better than the Demo version. I've completed two levels so far and sometimes the game felt completely smooth and that's on Unity in 12.10.

--- Comment #19 from Oliver Nacke wine@fractal.bz 2012-10-27 12:38:12 CDT --- *DOH*
While trying to track the issue down, I even stumbled upon some failed WMCreateReader() calls in the logs and _did_ install wmp9, but it then crashed somewhere else. Probably because my wineprefix used for testing was already broken due all the things I tried.
However, I started over with a fresh prefix, installed xact_jun2010 and wmp9 via winetricks, installed the game and yes I can confirm, it finally works!

--- Comment #22 from André Fettouhi A.Fettouhi@gmail.com 2012-10-27 15:43:52 CDT --- Can also confirm on Arch Linux 64 bit with wine 1.5.15 that Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams works fine after installing wmp9 in the wine prefix along with xact_jun2010.

--- Comment #23 from Michael Koch tensberg@gmx.net 2012-10-28 05:01:31 CDT --- I figured out what was my problem. GSGameExe_DX9.exe crashes if there is no config.ini file. GSLauncher.exe crashes without creating configuration files with a System.NullReferenceException, unless it is started from the "Giana Sisters - Twisted Dreams/launcher" directory.
My problem was that I started GSLauncher.exe from a different path, e. g :~ wine $WINEPREFIX/.../launcher/GSLauncher.exe instead of cd'ing to the launcher directory.
Here are the complete steps which made the game work for me:
export WINEARCH=win32 export WINEPREFIX=~/Games/Giana winecfg winetricks xact_jun2010 winetricks wmp9 wine GianaSistersTwistedDreams_Installer_key.exe cd $WINEPREFIX/../Giana\ Sisters\ -\ Twisted\ Dreams/launcher <- this makes the difference wine GSLauncher.exe

--- Comment #24 from André Fettouhi A.Fettouhi@gmail.com 2012-10-28 05:04:08 CDT --- Does the GSLauncher.exe hang for anyone else when you exit the game? I have to kill it with a killall.

Yes, the launcher hangs for me too. Not a serious issue, but a bit of an annoyance. I only used the launcher once for configuring the game and instead directly start the game via GSGameExe_DX9.exe.
Unfortunately on exit, this also spawns an exit screen which hangs.

It sounds like this bug is INVALID then, and whatever causes it to need wmp9 and xact_jun2010 are separate bugs. Agreed?
