Summary: Cannot register Quicken Product: Wine Version: 1.1.2 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: secur32 AssignedTo: kai.blin@gmail.com ReportedBy: benjamin.j.mccann@gmail.com
Under Quicken's "Help" menu, I have been trying to register the product. This is essential to be able to get regular updates to continue supporting connecting to online banking services.
When I click "Register Quicken" absolutely nothing happens and I am not presented with the box allowing for application registration. If I override secur32.dll and then click "Register Quicken" I am presented with a box that says "You must have Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or later with 128 bit encryption installed in order to register Quicken". However, I did install IE6 using IEs 4 Linux.

--- Comment #2 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-07-28 12:15:16 --- Please remove ~/.wine directory and reinstall your application ONLY. If you still have problems - reopen.
Please do not submit any bugs when using ies4linux as they will be closed as invalid.

--- Comment #3 from Ben McCann benjamin.j.mccann@gmail.com 2008-07-28 12:40:09 --- I had this problem before installing ies4linux, so it is still valid. Does ies4linux cause problems? Should I install IE in another manner or is it IE that causes the problems? I installed ies4linux only after receiving the error message "You must have Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or later with 128 bit encryption installed in order to register Quicken", but it did not help resolve the error.

--- Comment #4 from Kai Blin kai.blin@gmail.com 2008-07-28 13:06:40 --- I'm pretty sure quicken needs SCHANNEL (everybody else calls this SSL) support to register. Wine does not supply an SCHANNEL implementation so far.
As far as I know there has been some effort in getting the Windows schannel.dll to load in Wine and provide SCHANNEL, but I'm not sure if that's working yet.
On a quick search, there's a patch attached to http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-June/056347.html that should allow to do this, perhaps you could try that.

Yes, ies4linux causes problems, and they should be taken up with the ies4linux folks, not here.
That said, what Kai said is right: this doesn't work due to missing SSL (schannel) support. I don't know an easy workaround.

--- Comment #9 from SpinDr rparanji21@gmail.com 2009-06-10 00:53:35 --- I am able to launch Quicken Premier 2008 successfully but once I click 'Register Now', I do get a page which ought to be the registration dialog like page, but it is full of unintelligible garbage. I can close this page but this means I cannot do any online updates of any of my accounts. Quicken interface itself seems to stay stable though, albeit not very useful at this point.

once I click ... 'Register Now', I do get a page which ... is full of unintelligible garbage.
That's what I found using wine-1.1.26. Since this is different behavior to what people are reporting in this bug, I opened a separate Bug 19378 and attached a screenshot.
You can disable Quicken 2008's online registration by holding left Ctrl + left Shift down while choosing One Step Update.
