Summary: Thief: Deadly Shadows does not render text properly Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: wine-directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ehoover@mines.edu
Created an attachment (id=8111) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8111) Screenshot illustrating problem
Many things in Thief: Deadly Shadows do not properly render text. This makes it extremely difficult to use the menus, save/load games, or read in-game instructions. Also, the problem gets worse as you move the mouse around.

--- Comment #2 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-09-16 20:43:18 --- What video card, drivers? Have you installed corefonts? How did you installed Wine? If you self-compiled, then please run './configure --verbose' and verify that _all_ requirements are meat (and I mean _all_ not those you think are important). The only exceptions are sound drivers.

--- Comment #7 from Andrew Charles Hurst a.hurst@shef.ac.uk 2007-10-30 10:16:06 --- I don't think it's purely a font problem. More than just the fonts are corrupted: various UI controls in the in-game menu are decimated. I will try to attach a screenshot illustrating this.

I attach my own screenshot showing perhaps an extra dimension of the behaviour: the streaking lines are quite interesting.
This using a geforce 6200 (NV44a)
I wouldn't have called it a minor bug myself, since along with the escaping mouse, this makes the game virtually unplayable, despite the 3d engine running quite well.

--- Comment #11 from Erich Hoover ehoover@mines.edu 2008-04-16 10:24:35 --- This problem (or something related) is worse in the latest wine. There are now problems with rendering in-game, whole sections of the screen are corrupted. I suppose it is possible I've changed a wine graphics setting since I originally tested this (0.9.45 according to the bug), but I do not believe that I have.

Retest in a clean ~/.wine.

Things that do not belong are circled in red. Just like the problems with text, these things flicker and change as you move your mouse.

I think, it is not a regression, but an unimplemented feature: Texture Wrapping. BTW: Severity should be normal not minor, because the game is definitely unplayable. :-D

--- Comment #17 from Eabin Eabin@gmx.com 2008-06-29 12:20:56 --- i have a feeling that this particular feature won't be implemented anytime soon, because there is no direct OpenGL equivalent, afaik. and none of the more popular games seem to use it.

--- Comment #19 from Łukasz lukp1@op.pl 2009-01-04 05:52:07 --- When in menu and in game console spams: "fixme:d3d:state_wrap (WINED3DRS_WRAP0) Texture wraping not yet supported". As in game as in nemu are 3d objects still present in 1.1.12. affects other game: DeusEx 2: Invisible War. It slows down the game making it unplayable. The game works good enough only for very fast systems.

No, wine isn't trying to use it's own fonts (at least I've never seen a standard font like the one we're having troubles with)
And I know this bug discussion is centered around the D3DRS_WRAP0 errors, but I'm not convinced they're related. You often get the text (mostly) rendered correctly on the first drawing and then any redraw (mouse over buttons, page flipping books, etc) is completely screwed. From what I've been able to learn about D3DRS_WRAP0, I don't _think_ the text would _ever_ have been rendered correctly if that was the cause of our troubles.
Often there are recognisable parts of related textures (sections of alphabet, simple lines and other patterns) that are skewed into the bits of misrendered text. This is clearly a texture coordinate problem of some sort.
I wish I magically knew enough about D3D to be able to debug further :/

I've haven't seen any of the text rendered correctly on the first drawings. The corruption level pretty much stays the same as you scroll, mouse over, or etc., even though the parts that are corrupted can change. If I am in the options screen, and I can't read what a certain setting is, I can scroll around until a few key letters become uncorrupted and I can guess as to what it does.
Also, in case it matters, in windows I noticed that when you alt tab away from the game with the menu on, when you go back to the game, all of the text will be completely gone and you are just left with a blank menu with nothing but blank buttons and such. If you then mouse over the buttons, the text will come back on that particular button. Going back to the game then the menu refreshes everything.

--- Comment #23 from Michael Abbott michael@araneidae.co.uk 2009-10-19 05:43:18 --- This bug seems to have massively improved in 1.1.31 (not sure if the improvement was earlier, wasn't checking recently). In fact, the only visual defect I've noticed so far is small black box speckling during video; otherwise all the in game menus are legible and usable, at long last!
