Summary: docs incorrectly claim that unc paths work Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: All OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: documentation AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: codeslinger@compsalot.com
The docs for unc path are wrong they do not reflect reality. According to the docs http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/misc-things-to-configure#AEN41...
and also according to this rather odious comment http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2007-August/027715.html
unc paths, should work, all you do is create a symlink and you are done.
Well, I am under intense deadline pressure and I just spent two days of effort trying to get a client/server app to run that requires unc paths. And finally after a lot of study and banging of head against brick wall, finally I find this bug #425 which makes it pretty darn clear that not only does unc path not work, but it never actually has worked!!!!
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=425
So I ask that you kindly please fix the docs so that others are not subjected to the same levels of tribulations which I have just needlessly gone through. That bug has been open since 2002, I see no indication that it is going to get fixed any time soon.
I have the highest respect and admiration for the winehq project and the people who created it, but this sort of thing is a major black mark against wine. I will be very reluctant to attempt to use wine in the future.

--- Comment #1 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-07-15 13:47:27 --- UNC paths do work outside the shell namespace. So if your program tries to open file like "\server\share\file" with CreateFile() function - it should work.
The file browser part - doesn't (that's what missing).

--- Comment #2 from Erik codeslinger@compsalot.com 2008-07-15 17:43:51 --- hey great, thanks for the response!!!
*should* !== *does* work
I just spent two rather painful high stress days of banging my head against the wall trying to get this to work with a program that needs to be able to open a unc path. I gave up and am installing vmware at this very moment.
What I expect is to be able to type dir \server\share and see something. and that is documented in bug 425 as not working. also the program "medisoft" is not working.
But I am certainly open to suggestions... Perhaps I should explain what medisoft is doing. you see it is a client server app. It provides you with a browse dialog to locate the server, but you don't have to browse you can just type in the path if you know it -- which I tried....
Then AFAICT what it does is connect to that share and create a dummy file to ensure the path is valid. After that it uses the ip that it gets from looking up that computer/share and starts talking to the server via udp.
I am pretty sure the ui works, I expect the udp to work. But I can not no way no how get the unc share to work. And bug #425 makes it pretty clear to me that it does not work. Thus this request to change the docs and save others the grief that I went through.

--- Comment #3 from Erik codeslinger@compsalot.com 2008-07-15 18:41:53 --- the fact that medisoft uses the unc share to locate the server is the reason why I can not simply use a mapped drive letter. The letter gives no info about the actual server.
The stumbling block appears to be that medisoft first validates the unc share before it tries to talk to the server. This is speculation based on observing the failure, I have not actually monitored the wire.
What I can tell you with total certainty is that medisoft and unc shares do not work. I also see a lot of other apps in the database which are reported as not working due to networking problems.
Therefore I say that you are doing people a major disservice by having docs that claim it works when there is so much evidence and bugs to the contrary.

--- Comment #4 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2008-07-16 11:47:35 --- Please stop whining and help us fix the bug (not just the docs). What does the app say on the console? Is there a demo program somewhere we can try?

"Please stop whining"
er, uh, this is *wine* isn't it? I thought that's what I was supposed to do ;-)
But seriously I would be glad to help you fix this bug!!!
My stress level was exceedingly high because when an office's main cpu crashed I brazenly/foolishly decided to replace it with ubuntu, because I was not about to install vista, no how no way am I ever going to put anybody on that krap vista. So I stuck my neck out, way out, and tried to do an unproven technology in a crisis situation. bad idea really bad.... 5 full time employees breathing down my neck... and the docs telling me that something should work which doesn't.
It's going to be a few days before I can get to this. Am now in backlog/clean-up mode. Have people running on vmware but would much rather have the integration of wine.
Medisoft is available for a 30 day free trial, but unfortunately that is for a stand-alone version that does not do networking. and it is the networking that we need to fix. The server for medisoft is not available on a trial basis.
If you are serious about fixing this bug, please contact me by private mail and I will see if I can set you up with access to one of my servers. codeslinger at compsalot dot com

That makes it a challenge.

That's not the way open source works. We're mostly a bunch of volunteers here who do stuff as time permits, so you shouldn't expect any particular level of service. If you really want this fixed and want a developer assigned to it, I'd suggest you contact a consulting company that specializes in Wine (particularly Codeweavers) to see if they can give you an estimate.

--- Comment #7 from Erik codeslinger@compsalot.com 2008-08-13 20:10:33 --- I can't give you a copy of a proprietary program, that's not how it works. My intention was to make it possible for a developer to get access to the software. However I suspect that any test scenario for unc paths -- such as notepad network browsing -- would probably be sufficient for the purpose of reproducing this problem.
I would love to be able to send WINE gobs of money and have them fix this bug. Unfortunately I just am not in the position to be able to do that. I look forward to the day when the project/product I am working on (a replacment for Medisoft) becomes profitable, then I will be able to do it, when my business becomes successful I plan to be a heavy supporter of open source. But today is not that day, and meanwhile I am just a starving computer consultant who did two weeks of work for six hours of pay, trying to keep one of my customers afloat.
It took me two weeks because most of the stuff that was supposed to work did not actually in fact work... This is the nightmare of computer software (I'm talking about all of it especially M$, almost nothing works the way it is supposed to). For what it's worth, Vista won't run Medisoft either, so if WINE would run it you would have a major coup and a major reason for the small businesses who use Medisoft to migrate to Linux.
If you don't currently feel inspired to fix the bug then please go back to my original request, which was to fix the docs so that people are not mislead about the capability of WINE and won't waste their time trying to get something to work, that the developers know darn well does not actually work.

so if WINE would run it
++ and programs similar to it, of which there are many that expect to use unc paths.
then you would have a major coup and a major reason for businesses to migrate to Linux instead of Vista.
