Summary: Naturally speaking 7 fails to start after voice training Product: Wine Version: 0.9.59. Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: ole AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: dragon-heart@piments.com
Hi,
I decided to check up on wine progress on DNS 7 after about of year.
First off the installer worked fine after working around the IE5 riched20 issues which if seem to be original program bugs rather than wine defects (thanks winehq). Like testing for the presence of riched20 rather than trying to load the require libs.
Voice training is now near perfect , worthy of platinum rating. Many thanks for the progess there.
At this point I was in a state of high optimism. Sadly, it did not last.
On running natspeak it got a brief series of msgs to console and a diminuative "window" with the mike icon (which did turn on and off). That's all.
copying ole32 oleaut32 mscvrt rpcrt4 from win2k and using winecfg to use them native, builtin as indicated on winehq for earlier wine versions did not improve matters, although it gave somewhat more errors to console.
hardly seems worth an attachment for a dozen lines so here's the output:

BTW. the application window, for what it's worth, bears the title "Wine system tray"
Pre 0.9.20 this was very much a working app so this regression to useless is a great shame.
It may well be that there is not much wrong here and in view of the perfect training session this may be close to going gold.
Maybe the fixme is the key.

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-04-20 16:53:19 --- Please run a regression test: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

--- Comment #2 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-04-21 13:21:41 --- According to Susan's report on appdb, DNS 7 worked without any native dlls as of Wine 0.9.44. Can you try with a Wine 0.9.60, a clean .wine directory, and no native dlls?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12683
--- Comment #3 from dragon-heart@piments.com 2008-04-21 14:28:17 --- what are you refering to? Susan's report logs this version as "garbage" and her later comment is this:
When running the program it comes up SLOWLY (2 minutes). When the Tip of the Day box pops up, you can then open DragonPad (4 minuts) and turn on the microphone (15 seconds). After that, I get the same speed and accuracy I got under Windows 2000.
Files can be saved to the hard drive. Cut and Paste to other applications does not work right now.
Running the program is buggy. It works best when it is the only program running. Some of the commands work, some do not.
That was slightly better success than I got running with *59 *60 and cvs , which all seemed about the same: perfect install and training and then collapsed in a heap when it tries to go over to dicatation.
This clearly is not a big problem since it has to go through dictation during training but the is a show stopper here.
She also refers to using winetricks which I understand has been frowned upon for a couple of years and is generally discouraged.

--- Comment #4 from dragon-heart@piments.com 2008-04-21 14:34:29 --- ok, I checked out the fakeie6 she refers to using. It seems this is acceptable as it just sets reg entry. It is basically a Dan Kegel's rework of the ie5 reg tweek I posted in the dns 7 installation notes. Either will do for DNS which want to believe IE5 is there.

--- Comment #5 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-04-21 15:37:09 --- To quote Susan:
-- After a long period of regression, DNS7 works pretty well with all-WINE DLLs.
Instructions are simple.
(1) Install WINE (2) Get WINETRICKS from wiki.winehq.org/winetricks run: sh winetricks fakeie6 --
There are times when it is appropriate to use winetricks to get around bugs, but users should not use it to randomly replace Wine dlls with native dlls.

--- Comment #6 from dragon-heart@piments.com 2008-04-21 16:23:34 --- Fine , but why are you deliberately ignoring what she posts below that which clearly indicates that it's crap.
I've just run through this again with a fresh build of 0.9.60 and a fresh .wine , results are the same: a perfect installation and training session : just needed the IE5 reg tweek and 'touch riched20.dll'
However, utterly useless beyond this (well maybe I need to wait 10 or 15 min for the window to come up LOL ). This is "garbage" at this stage.
On looking at this again, I have now been able to get some more information. It appears that the small window I am seeing is just a task bar element to turn the mike on / off. (I do get the Tip of the Day dlg until I deselect it, that much is fine.)
Thus there is NO main window at all. No drastic errors , no cpu drain. Only silence.

--- Comment #7 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-04-21 16:30:44 --- I'm not _deliberately_ ignoring anything. I don't see the word "crap" on the appdb page anywhere, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.
She gave the app a "garbage" rating in 2006 with Wine 0.9.18. I am quoting her from 2007 with Wine 0.9.44, which is more relevant than her earlier results.

--- Comment #8 from dragon-heart@piments.com 2008-04-21 17:16:57 ---
If her idea of working well means wait 5 or 10 minutes for a window to open and then having to shut down every other prog on the system which has ground to a halt, I paraphrase this as crap . My words not hers.
look you clearly have found her post so read it , all of it , or read what I quoted from it and stop wasting everyone's time.

--- Comment #9 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2008-05-05 15:26:58 --- Sorry to have not kept up the posting on DNS7. I have only run DNS 9.0 Preferred for the last few months. The last time I installed DNS7 was months ago, and it ran well, within limits. (Dictation into Notepad / DragonPad worked very well). I will try it again and post results here.

--- Comment #10 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2008-05-06 10:35:59 --- I installed DNS 7.3 with today's git and the following instructions:
sh winetricks fakeie6
Then I opened the CD Rom file and clicked on setup.exe, and followed the instructions.
Training ran and saved well. The program came up quickly. Dictating into notepad was blazingly fast and reasonably accurate. Later versions (8 and 9) have sacrificed some speed for accuracy.
Dictating into Notepad is the best way to use this program. I have never been impressed by the results in DragonPad, as compared to Notepad. Notepad is much, much faster, and the results are slightly more accurate. Also there is still a bug that blocks out a bit of text on the L-hand side.

--- Comment #11 from dragon-heart@piments.com 2008-05-06 11:05:57 --- many thanks for the update. Could you just note your system details? Still Ubuntu 7? and gcc version etc.
also pls confirm you are running 100% wine, no overrides tweeks etc. apart from the ie6 reg key.
I can't recall if my version is 7.0 or 7.2 so there may be slight diffs but I was unable to start without at least faking riched20 since DNS specifically tests for the file.
It seems you are not seeing that. Maybe a bug fix in 7.3
I am also building with gcc-4.2.2 so that may be a cause of some differences, I'll look into this later.
Thanks for the info.

--- Comment #12 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2008-05-06 11:45:47 --- DNS 7.3 is what I use. I think earlier versions were withdrawn because of bugs. You should have 7.3. If you have an earlier version, try to get an upgrade somewhere. If I recall, they weren't out long and were buggy.
I use Ubuntu's Hardy Heron, and I have all updates as of today. GCC 4.2.3-2
Before I compile from git, I run the following command: sudo apt-get build-dep wine wine-dev to get all dependencies. Then I still need the following: sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts xdg-utils
I build wine using the following command: ./tools/wineinstall Then I do: sh winetricks fakeie6 then installed DNS7.3 from the disk.
I did that today with a completely clean wine install. I did not tweak.
Good luck. Susan
