At default the option "Emulate a virtual desktop" is set to 800x600 in winecfg.
What about an option that sets the desktop size for virtual desktops
automatically to the resolution of the system?

The whole point it to not needing virtual desktop at all. Especially for full
screen programs.

Why not autodetect the resolution and have that as default rather than 800x600?

If the virtual desktop is not needed we can remove it. But the virtual desktop
is still needed because it can solve a lot of problems.

Surely there would be much more problems if we would look at every open bug
report. But one argument is still missing: Why do we have the virtual desktop
if there are "no problems"?

Because it's useful and, as you said, it does solve issues.

This is quite irrelevant to the original enhancement request anyway. You have
the option to change the virtual desktop resolution. It might be interesting to
make the default resolution identical as the resolution at wineboot, but that's
up to whoever would work on it (and julliard) to decide whether it's worth it.

Setting VD's size to main monitor's size won't help everyone and will create
lots of issues.

For example I only use VD that is smaller then my main display's resolution. Or
I'm setting it to the size of my secondary monitor. In both cases this is not
what you asked. Especially auto updating on boot.

This is no problem because this should be an option and the user decides if he
wants to enable it or not. It could be an additional checkbox in winecfg which
is only clickable if "Emulate a virtual desktop" is activated. It could be
named "Automatically use the system resolution".

Are we also envisioning that the virtual desktop be borderless in this case?
It'd have to be to fit on the screen, but that also presents its own set of
problems. Or should the size take into account window decorations?

My initial thought when I created this ticket all the years ago was that such
an option would just map transparently to the screen resolution (as if the
screen resolution would have been entered manually into the "Desktop size"
fields of "Emulate a virtual desktop").

In Wine 9.8 (commit b86cc9e6589), `wine explorer /desktop=foobar` did open a
borderless window that filled the entire screen, but in Wine 9.15 (commit
5ffe201c251) it went back to being a bordered window with a default size. I was
hoping that the fullscreen feature would stick around.

You can always start a fullscreen virtual desktop with explorer
/desktop=foobar,widthxheight, but otherwise it has to respect the default
virtual desktop size doesn't it?
