--- Comment #4 from Luke Bratch l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk 2009-10-29 09:49:55 --- Confirming I have the same problem, tested with the latest Git.
The following might be useful:
Windows (Vista and 7) users seem to be having the same problem, as per: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1002950
The problem there seems to be fixed by making sure the Steam service is the latest version, and is running.
By default the Steam service isn't used in Wine, as it isn't required in Win XP (Wine's default reported OS).
The game and/or Steam seem(s) to detect the OS as Vista (as reported by the warning about graphics driver versions that Steam gives when starting the game).
To try to get around this, I set Wine's reported Windows version to Vista, which makes Steam install the Steam service. The service now definitely starts automatically when Steam starts, however the game still fails with the same error.

Valve released a fix for this today, http://www.steamfriends.com/news/4657/steam-client-update-released
However, the same problem still persists. The only difference seems to be that the game crashes when the menu background appears, instead of as the movie ends. It seems to crash in the same way, but i'll add another stack trace anyway.

no, there is no backtrace or indication where the crash is, someone could start by attaching a compressed +relay,+seh,+tid log.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20504
--- Comment #9 from Luke Bratch l_bratch@yahoo.co.uk 2009-11-01 08:34:27 --- Normally the process left4dead2.exe restarts 4 or 5 times before it shows the error. Sadly when running with +relay,+seh,+tid it seems to restart endlessly without ever showing the error.
I gave it about 15 minutes, during which time it restarted left4dead2.exe I would guess at least 50 times.
Here is a URL for the second attempt, which I stopped after 5 restarts: http://www.tghost.co.uk/wine/l4d2demo.exe-relaysehtid.bz2
The uncompressed output is 2.3 GB, vs 21 GB for the first attempt. It is too large to attach (17.8 MB compressed).
It includes the entire Steam startup procedure too, as the game is launched from within Steam, which is several hundred MB alone. If there is some way to enable debug channels for all processes at a chosen point rather than from the start, I can do this instead.

There was a Steam update today, which has stopped the endlessly reloading behaviour.
Now it attempts to load once, doesn't actually appear to start left4dead2.exe, and fails with the Steam message "incomplete installation"*.
Attached is the normal terminal output with the latest Steam and the last wine Git.
Here is the entire thing, from the loading of Steam, with +relay,+seh+tid: http://www.tghost.co.uk/wine/l4d2demo.exe-relaysehtid-2.bz2
Here are the last 2942420 lines of that file, which skips all the Steam loading, and starts from a few seconds before I tried to launch the game from within Steam: http://www.tghost.co.uk/wine/lastlines.txt.bz2
(Again these two files are too large to attach.)
*The installation is supposed to complete upon the first run, under Windows as well.

--- Comment #11 from Laissus Yoann yoann.laissus@gmail.com 2009-11-06 12:00:05 --- I have succeded to launch left 4 dead 2 with steam. But before i had to run left 4 dead 2 with a virtual Windows xp.
After this, the game passes the intro movie and the game run like the first l4d. Without the srgb patch, the performance are as bad as the l4d 1.

--- Comment #12 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com 2009-11-06 15:41:53 --- Yeah, it's the "completing installation" part that fails, the game itself seems to work fine.

--- Comment #13 from Henri Verbeet hverbeet@gmail.com 2009-11-13 13:21:50 --- This might work a bit better with 1.1.33.

Do you happen to know which commit(s) fixed this?
