--- Comment #6 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-10-11 13:31:37 --- Do the regression testing then. In the main time, this is the same bug as the others. Unless you have something really broken in your configuration. In that case it's invalid.
Follow the how to on appDB for how to reinstall steam with saving all your game data. Run your game from the command line as specified in the howto. Attach complete terminal output including exact command line.

And I noticed that other people reporting this bug also appear to be using gentoo. So maybe this is gentoo bug, or dose anyone with a different distro have the same problem?
I'm going to try to install wine out side of portage and see if it helps.
Also I disabled steam community in-game as mentioned in Bug 9572 and I got as far as viewing the startup screen and a longer backtrack when it crashed.

Rebuilding wine from source did not help. However, by setting the sound drivers to ALSA, instead of OSS, I was able to view the opening video with sound and get to the 3D menu screen. However, when I when to New game it would go to a loading screen and get almost to the end before hl2.exe would crash and give the same backtrack that I posted above.

--- Comment #21 from markus giese spreetec@gmx.net 2007-10-23 18:33:14 --- i disabled ingame community in settings, and now the game runs fine. i also executed this command to prevent registry in use errors when starting the game : chattr -R +S Steam/
i started the game 7x after disabling ingame community, it seems to work. before it wasnt starting even 1 time. forgot to mention that in winecfg i also enabled OSS instead off alsa only, maybe this is related to ALSA ??
my settings in winecfg are : ALSA & OSS enabled, BASIC emulation, 44khz,16bit, and i did not enabled the driver emulation
a lot of luck and fun gn8

--- Comment #29 from Douglas E. Warner silfreed-winehq@silfreed.net 2008-02-21 12:03:43 --- I've recently tried compiling versions 0.9.46, 0.9.48, 0.9.50, 0.9.55, and latest git head and had crashes on all these versions.
For me the crash seems to come just as the 3d menu is being drawn; if I start with -console, the console will begin to be drawn, but the crashes.
I'm running x86_64 arch; nvidia Quadro NVS 130M video card w/ nvidia proprietary drivers.
If you need someone to help test patches or debug, let me know.
