PlayOnLinux is not supported in this bugtracker, you have to use plain wine.
Could you try clean wineprefix with plain wine?

Bought the game via steam. Don't thing they allow playing without steam. Will
make an attempt.

The executable does not run without steam. Resolv as needed.

Could you attach the full console log not just the backtrace, please? What
video card and driver are you using?

PoL is not supported here, you should install and run the game (via Steam)
using plain Wine, otherwise your bug report will be invalid.

I also have the Steam version of Sid Meier's Pirates!, but the game starts
without problems here on Fedora 17 (32 bit), Nvidia gfx card with the
proprietary driver 295.59.
I tested with Wine 1.5.7 and wine-1.5.7-213-g2e167f6.
