Bug ID: 52586 Summary: Printing to cups-pdf crashes Approach Product: Wine-staging Version: 7.2 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: ToddAndMargo@zoho.com CC: leslie_alistair@hotmail.com, z.figura12@gmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 71909 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=71909 Print frame
Hi All,
Fedora 35, x64 wine-7.2-1.fc35.i686 (from the Fedora Repo) cups-2.3.3op2-13.fc35.x86_64 cups-pdf-3.0.1-14.fc35.x86_64 Smart Suite: N9.8.0208.1300
When attempting to print to CUPS-PDF from Approach (Smart Suite), the print box frame pops up but does not populate (you see the background behind it) and Approach crashes. See the attachment.
The symptom is the same using wine-7.2-1.fc35.i686 from the WineHQ repo.
Downgrading to wine-6.16-1.fc35.i686 also from the Fedora repo corrects the issue.
Please fix as soon as possible.

I do not have the technical expertise to do a regression test.
And I am in hte middle of my business taxes and will not be able to test v7 for several months.

--- Comment #3 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- Created attachment 72431 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=72431 Stack overflow
I suspect what I see is the same bug as the symptoms are identical, although with a different dialogue box. In my case I noticed it when clicking the "Record 1" box in the taskbar to go to a different record. The "Go to Record" frame pops up with the heading in the title bar but the display area fails to populate, the program freezes and the terminal displays a stack overflow.
All lines including "SYSTEM PERFORMANCE INFORMATION" are produced before clicking the button.
I'm using PCLinuxOS, which introduces serious problems for building the 32-bit component of wine, so I can't dissect further, and it's great to see a similar symptom appearing at 7.2 because that sends me to look for the 7.2 changelog. I had a computer outage for six weeks so I went from 7.1 where everything worked to 7.6 where it didn't. The bug is still present in 7.9.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52586
--- Comment #4 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- A stack overflow also occurs during installation of Lotus Smartsuite preventing installation being completed. However, it does not affect the launch of a pre-installed application.
I do not seem to have cups-pdf available, or do not know how to enable it.

--- Comment #5 from Todd Chester ToddAndMargo@zoho.com ---
I do not seem to have cups-pdf available, or do not know how to enable it.
Here is how I do it with Fedora:
# dnf install cups cups-lpd cups-pdf # systemctl enable cups.server # systemctl enable cups-lpd.socket
# systemctl start cups.server
If cups is already installed, after installing cups-pdf:
# systemctl restart cups.server
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52586
--- Comment #6 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- Thanks. I hadn't realised cups-pdf is a separate product! I have installed it and can confirm I see the stack overflow if I select cups-pdf as the printer with wine > 7.1. In fact, pressing the Print button produces it with any printer!
So, a stack overflow can be triggered by either clicking the record number button at the bottom of a single-record view or by trying to print.
I'm using Lotus Approach '97.

--- Comment #8 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- I've tried to bisect on a 32-bit VM running Devuan, but I'm obviously doing something wrong because when I followed the instructions I got: "xxxx@winetest:~/wine-build$ git bisect reset Already on 'master' Your branch is up to date with 'origin/master'. xxxx@winetest:~/wine-build$ git bisect start xxxx@winetest:~/wine-build$ git bisect good wine-7.1 xxxx@winetest:~/wine-build$ git bisect bad wine-7.2 6a236ac29be0f34da5fc7757103dd446e17da051 was both good and bad"
The regression testing page doesn't me what to do about that!
The current state did compile and confirm the presence of the bug.

--- Comment #9 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- I can only assume the Devuan build of git lacks what it needs to use the tags and needs the actual commit id instead. Once I got those out of git log and used those I got a sane result. Now compiling the first bisection.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52586
--- Comment #10 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- Although the symptoms are near identical though triggered by different actions, they are not the same bug!
After a fruitless bisection I find the reporter's bug is indeed present in 7.2 but mine isn't. More bisection on the two bugs to follow!

--- Comment #14 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- The bug actually started at the commit I gave, which is between 7.0 and 7.1. That is, the printing bug. Interestingly, judging by its title, this commit was intended to correct an error in a dialogue box for one application and appears to have broken a dialogue box in another!
I am about to start bisecting for the document number selection bug (somewhere between 7.2 and 7.6). I'll note my findings here for information but will start a new report so it can be handled separately without causing confusion about which bug is being worked on! It was my mistake to conclude the two bugs were the same because they both appeared between the two releases I had used and produced segfaults producing the same dialogue box behaviour.

--- Comment #15 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- Sorry, not segfaults, stack overflows caused by infinite recursion in ThreeButtonDlgProc.

--- Comment #17 from yodelu crinteanu.cristian@gmail.com --- reverted all commits on user32 and i can confirm that printing IS working The problem is winedbg does not show which function caused that crash I expect(ed) to see some outputs like gdb do it when do it with debug-symbols attached.. In this case, it seems that relay+ do more than winedbg - at least for me.. Anyway, I'm trying to isolate the bug better - as much as a packager can do..

a kind of revert of https://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/commit/b02405d799fafdc9830aafb9308416... for wine 7.10 it works perfect for me ..

Are you sure it's caused by the patches? And reverting the patches fix it? Because it's working fine on my end with the patch on top of wine git-077d64b

--- Comment #25 from kjpetrie winehq.bugs@kjpetrie.co.uk --- No, I need to investigate further. I'm new to git so need to read up on applying patches in that environment. In the meantime, I used a Devuan VM to build a 32-bit RPM for my PCLinuxOS test VM and reported my initial findings, which may well have nothing to do with the bug but with a defect in my build system for 32-bit RPMs. When I get a chance I'll build and test natively in the git system. I suspect it will then work, as it fixed the 'other' bug, but I'll confirm when I've done the test.
