Summary: screen size is confused by program Product: Wine Version: 1.1.29 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: cnbiz850@sohu.com
A program that is preferred to run with full screen. After I first installed it, that is what it did -- popped up full screen (maximized) -- on the first run. Then subsequently it did in the same way. However lately, I hit somehow "normalize/maximize" (at the upper-right corner of the program window). Then the window shrank to about a quarter of the screen, which is not necessarily a wrong behavior. What is wrong is when I hit "normalize/maximize" again, which is supposed to maximize the window, the window get enlarged by just a few pixels instead. Hit "normalize/maximize" again shrinks the window by the same few pixels, again then enlarged by the few pixels. It is stuck at that rough size. I can't even drag the edge of the window to enlarge/shrink it further. At next startup, it goes to the previous small size and can not really be resized. The only way (seems to me) that can change it back to normal is by going through "winecfg" unchecking "allow window manager to control it", running it and bringing it to full size, then closing it down, bringing up "winecfg" again and re-checking the "allow window manager to control it". The next and subsequent runs it will go to full size -- until the "normalize/maximize" is hit again.

--- Comment #1 from cnbiz850@sohu.com 2009-10-01 11:03:51 --- Some update.
Actually, when it happens, as I press "normalize/maximize", it doesn't really shrink and enlarge by a few pixels as I mentioned last time (I had a wrong impression last time). There is some flicker when I press "normalize/maximize", but the size stays unchanged. Now I also mentioned last time that some winecfg operations can bring it back to normal. This is only true on my old computer. On my new computer, it no longer works (it worked once before I last reported). Also, if I press "minimize", it then shrinks to the panel, but it won't get normalized when the icon on the panel is pressed. So in summary, it can not be controlled by Linux window manager, except that "close" still works and also it can be dragged with a mouse. This behavior seems only relating to this one particular program. Don't know why.
I am running Ubuntu 9.04 (with Gnome of course) fully updated on both my computers.

I found it actually has to do with visual effect (on Ubuntu: System>Preference>Appearance>Visual Effects). On my old computer, I normally have the effect off, so it behaves like what I described on the first report -- tweaking winecfg can correct the problem. When I have the effect on, winecfg can not correct it, except that unchecking "allow window manager to control it" still can make it to maximize, but when restoring window manager control, it does not stay maximized anymore. This is confirmed on my new computer as well.

--- Comment #3 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2009-10-05 00:07:56 --- "Visual Effects" means Compiz, and it usually means a Compiz bug.
Which winecfg operation(s) do fix the problem?

--- Comment #4 from cnbiz850@sohu.com 2009-10-05 09:31:33 --- What I mentioned about a "fix" with winecfg is basically this:
When I can not enlarge the application, I shut down first, then bring up winecfg, select that application in winecfg and unset the "allow window manager to control it", then bring up the application and maximize it, then close it, then in winecfg re-set "allow window manager to control it" for it, then bring up the application, and it stays maximized. That is what I meant a "fix" though it is not really a fix.
However, the above mentioned operation is only effective as a "fix" when I have no "visual effects" under Gnome. It does not fix the problem when I have "visual effects" on, even though unchecking "allow window manager to control it" in winecfg allows me to maximize the application, but when I re-check "allow window manager to control it" the application does not stay maximized. It does not mean that the problem only occurs when "visual effects" is on. When I have no "visual effects" and hit "normalize/maximize" on the application, it goes to about a quarter of the screen and can not be maximized again (unless I do the winecfg thing mentioned about).
So I don't believe that this is purely an issue with compiz. Also keep in mind, no other native Linux application I could notice does it with/without the visual effects.

--- Comment #6 from cnbiz850@sohu.com 2009-10-09 11:02:59 --- Did some more experiments -- actually tried to use the program on my new machine -- and found more troubles.
Guess it has more to do with my new system as the problems seen here do not really happen on the old one. The new one is Dell Studio 1450 and I am running Ubuntu 9.04 64bits.
As I keep testing the program, somehow I started to get EAccessViolation popups from the program and of course a dead program. Basically the output at the shell has this: fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x32e890,0x00000000), stub!
I searched on the web and it seems having to do with OpenGL. At this moment I don't have visual effect turned on for my desktop. For a test, I started basic visual effect for the desktop, then the program runs without the EAccessViolation error and also no EnumDisplayDevicesW error from shell output. But what happens is that the program only goes to a quarter screen size and can not be resized - no larger no smaller. I then turned off the visual effect and ran the program. It not also goes to a quarter screen but can be resized with dragging the border of the window. But as soon as I release the mouse from dragging, I got a lot of error message and debug messages at the shell.
