Bridge It is an old game (~2004) developed in conjunction with Nvidia.
Therefore, it requires Nvidia hardware to play.

I'm using an Nvidia 8600GT, but the game fails to detect it. Upon launch, I am
greeted by a message box "Incompatibly hardware detected" since it expects
Nvidia hardware.
I am unsure if this is because the game can't possibly know about an
8th-generation Geforce, or because of Wine. It was designed with the Gf4, 5 and
6 in mind.

I get these:

fixme:wgl:X11DRV_wglGetPixelFormatAttribivARB unsupported 2004 WGL Attribute

upon launchung the game, ranging from 2004 to 2009. The screen goes blank for a
short while before the Dialog box appears.

It sounds like the game uses OpenGL. Figure out if the game still works on
Windows or not. If it doesn't function on Windows anymore than the bug is not a
Wine one.

Tried the game on Wine with a Geforce 4. I can still see the same bug.
I know that the game works with a Geforce 4 on Windows, so this is a Wine bug.

Verified on my own hardware: Bridge It runs on Windows with a GF8. Wine fails.

Try the patch in bug 15839 , and set a reasonable nvidia driver name and card
name. Might help.

It has unlocked higher detail graphics settings in at least two games for me.

Sadly, this didn't fix the bug. I'm guessing Bridge It's detection mechanism is
a bit more sophisticated, as they probably anticipated people on ATI hardware
were going to try to circumvent it. No idea how to check what the game checks
for tho...

The issue persists for me in wine-1.1.27-63-g862bd3c. I am using a NVIDIA
GeForce 7800 GT card.

I'm using wine-1.3.13 with an NVidia 9800 GT card, and I'm seeing the same
problem as this, a large number of repetitions of:

game (which seems a bit unlikely, though I don't have Windows on this machine
to test it with this very card.)

fixed.

I'm still getting 'Incompatible hardware detected!' message when trying to run
Bridge It demo.
Tested with Wine 1.3.32 and wine-1.3.32-369-gd351e02.

The same fixmes are present for me as reported in comment #7.

The fact is that the currently available demo version is an updated one, and it
is indeed running fine in Wine (wine-1.5.30-88-g7559526). The original version
still fails to start under Wine with an "incompatible hardware detected"
message, and this version is still available at:
http://www.geforce.com/games-applications/pc-games/bridge-it/downloads

It could worth the effort to see how these 2 different versions behave under
native Windows (I don't have Windows installed, so can't test any of them).

I can reproduce the issue with this version

I tested on Win7 and it doesn't happen there.

version 495.46.
