Summary: Regression for Icewind Dale 2 : very low framerate Product: Wine Version: 1.1.7 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: gizmm0@hotmail.com CC: stefan@codeweavers.com
I get very low fps, around 4 or 5 i would say. This renders the game unplayable. Every animation in the game seems affected, even mouse movement is not smooth. This does not affect menus, the problem only appears once a game is launched.
The problem is still there with wine-1.1.7.
In case it might be useful, the video card used is Nvidia 8600M GT, with nvidia drivers 177.80.

wined3d: Use a swapchain for GDI surfaces.
This is a long-needed cleanup aimed at removing the ddraw_primary, ddraw_window, ddraw_width and ddraw_height members from IWineD3DDeviceImpl, which just do not belong there. Destination window and screen handling is supposed to be done by swapchains.

--- Comment #1 from Chris simulcra@uchicago.edu 2008-11-27 00:27:11 --- what are you visual settings?
starting with around wine 1.1.4 i had very low FPS - i was using a combination of "emulate a virtual desktop" in the wine config settings and setting iwd2 to be fullscreen. However, if i disable "emulate a virtual desktop" and set iwd2 itself to run in a window, then i don't have a low FPS problem.
just want to know if this is the same issues that i had.

--- Comment #7 from Zdeněk Kopřivík zdenek.koprivik@post.cz 2009-01-10 04:44:14 --- If it helps this is what I get with Worms World Party:
In Wine-1.1.2 (last not affected version) I experience this: DDrawRenderer not set (default): game renders OK and fast DDrawRenderer set to "gdi": game renders OK and fast - in this setting and with patch for blank screen menus bug and one more patch the game could get gold rating as it is working nice DDrawRenderer set to "opengl": game does not render but is fast (judging by the sound)
In newer versions of Wine (tested on 1.1.12): DDrawRenderer not set (default): game renders OK but very slow (1-2 fps) DDrawRenderer set to "gdi": game renders OK but very slow (1-2 fps) DDrawRenderer set to "opengl": game renders OK and a bit faster (5-8 fps) but still not much playable
I'm talking about setting the DirectDrawRenderer via registry in HKCU\Software\Wine\AppDefaults\wwp.exe\Direct3D.
It would be nice to get the game working fast with gdi as in Wine-1.1.2, because there's a patch to fix black screen bug in menus which works only for gdi.

--- Comment #8 from Christian Folkers DarkCutler@web.de 2009-01-18 11:06:42 --- This bug also effects runaway and runaway2.
As soon as many things get drawn (snow flakes for example) the fps are dropping as low as 1fps (wine-1.1.9). I tried all the different combinations of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D keys without luck.
With wine-1.1.2 i get max fps.

I have the same behaviour with wine-1.1.15. The issue only happens when fullscreen mode is set in the game (iwd2). It seems that the the wine setting "emulate virutal desktop" has no influence with respect to this problem.
Setting the resolution to 1024x768 before starting the game does not help. It seems that when the screen resolution matches the resolution of the game, the only in-game available setting is fullscreen mode.

--- Comment #10 from Vincent Povirk madewokherd@gmail.com 2009-04-07 14:12:45 --- I looked into this a little bit a while back and neglected to post the information on the bug. That means I have lost some details.
Profiling Worms: Armageddon showed that most of the CPU time was spent doing 8-bit -> 24/32-bit image copying (palette mapping). I believe this result is the same as from before the regression.
I also found that the copying was in response to ddraw functions like BltFast and Flip. I believe that BltFast would in the past have been an 8-bit -> 8-bit copy and not required until the final Flip when we do palette mapping on the entire frame. This leads me to believe that some surfaces are now being created as 24/32-bit, when they should be 8-bit.

This makes the 4. chapter unplayable, because there are snowflakes everywhere :-) The only thing that helped was downgrading from latest devel to wine 1.0.1.

Worms World Party no longer suffers from this bug in Wine 1.1.25, good work.
