Summary: Sid Meier's Railroads Demo carshes on startup Product: Wine Version: 0.9.52. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: piaskal+wine@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=10078) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10078) Sid Meier's Railroads Demo crash output
At first it was complaining about missing dx dll. err:module:import_dll Library d3dx9_28.dll (which is needed by L"C:\Games\Sid Meiers Railroads Demo\RailRoadsDemo.exe") not found err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\Games\Sid Meiers Railroads Demo\RailRoadsDemo.exe" failed, status c0000135
I tried to copy that dll from existing Windows install.
With this dll the Demo crashes on startup (dereferencing null pointer).
Output log attached.

--- Comment #6 from Louis Lenders xerox_xerox2000@yahoo.co.uk 2008-01-06 15:19:23 --- Hi, i tried the demo but instead of a crash i get a "hang". Couldn't really figure out why :( However appdb has some interesting info: I changed the file ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/louis/My\ Documents/My\ Games/Sid\ Meier's\ Railroads\ Demo/Settings.ini
and set
SkipOpeningMovies = 1 VBlankSynch = 0
With that the hang was gone, and the game started for me. Maybe you could give that a try too.

I see the same in the demo in wine-1.3.21-290-gd9fb7b9, though only VBlankSynch is = 0 is needed.

--- Comment #12 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-03-27 19:56:15 CDT --- Hmm. Using the demo download 9cf82945770bc4b959964ae28f8966759e9d5cda RailroadsDemo.zip the demo is now aborting on startup, complaining "A required security module cannot be activated." "This program cannot be executed (3000)." A scan of the demo shows that it's protected with securom 7.27.
Same thing with wine-1.2.
How'd this work before?

Different gcc versions, maybe?

--- Comment #14 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-03-28 00:03:14 CDT --- Yeah, on Ubuntu 11.04 I get the same results as you, it's Ubuntu 12.04 beta that has the new crash. I'll try rebuilding with with older gcc when I get to a 32 bit installation (seems you can't build 32 bit wine on 64 bit ubuntu without a chroot as of 12.04.)

--- Comment #17 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- Created attachment 47984 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47984 shouldnt look like this
I installed the game into prefix, which had other game. It run and looked good.
I removed all it's content and made default prefix and rerun the game (demo), no crash but it doesn't draw everything it should.
I haven't figured out what makes the game so bad looking. It looked very different with some dll overrides when I 1st time tried it.

--- Comment #18 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- Created attachment 47985 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47985 works better
I 1st tried to override .dlls, but they didnt seem to have effect.
Then I finally used winetricks to override d3dx9_36, it wanted to download directx. Not sure about the version, but it had 2010 in it's name.
After rerun, I get the game looking like in attached picture. Only d3dx9_36 is overrun.
It's working a lot better, but still water isn't like it should.

I sent wrong log by accident
I removed all overrides from wine and the game looks the same as last picture. So installing direcxt seems to make difference.

--- Comment #21 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- I found out that I can set 1920x1080 resolution so I did that, also I set few settings better (needs to restart game).
Also I set override for d3dx9_28 via winetricks,
The water works now.
That's the only override I have currently.

--- Comment #22 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- I had demo in my hard-drive
sha1sum RailroadsDemo.exe b578d09c0eb9c5787728c8a9f1c2c439cae4f913
265,8Mb
I cleaned prefix. Installed the demo, I cant see crash. Even the graphics are correctly drawn, but the scrolling is a bit slow 1920x1080.
If the demo is the same I would say this is fixed.
The demo contains some dx files, I don't know what it installs. You cant avoid that.
I didnt use any overrides this time.
