Summary: mdcrack no longer works under wine Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: bofh1234@hotmail.com
I used to be able run mdcrack under wine 0.9.45. I had a hard drive crash and was forced to reinstall. After that I am unable to run mdcrack using wine. I am running slackware 12.1. I have tried every single version of wine (removepkg wine, rm -rf .wine0, rm -rf /tmp/.wine0, installpkg wine) and mdcrack always gives the same error Error: Unable to allocate enough memory
I am using mdcrack 1.8(3) from http://c3rb3r.openwall.net/mdcrack/ MDCrack-sse.exe --charset=tesTES --algorithm=NTLM1 --minsize=8 --maxsize=8 D280553F0103F2E643406517296E7582
The funny thing is if I remove the --algorithm=NTLM1 option, mdcrack runs but does not return the correct value. The problem isn't with mdcrack as it worked great BEFORE the hard drive crash.
I have also tried booting a Fedora 9 Live cd, did a yum install wine, and ran mdcrack and I get the same error.

How to run a regression test if the version cannot be build?

Something changed from mdcrack-182 to 183 and that change is causing the problem. I have tried wine-1.1.6 and 1.1.7 and the combination that works best for me is wine-1.1.7 and mdcrack-182.
We now have to contact mdcrack@videotron.ca and get him/her to fix mdcrack so it works with wine again.

--- Comment #27 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
this might be a multi-threading application bug that just works in some cases by pure luck.
Although you can limit the 'cruncher' threads ('--threads=1') it will still fail when '--algorithm=NTLM1' is supplied via command line. All 'secondary' cruncher threads work the same way. Each thread gets its own instance data located in .data section.
The outcome is that an invalid memory block is passed to HeapReAlloc() which fails the heap manager validation (expected).

--- Comment #28 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
rediscovered this after some years. I had another look at this and my conclusion is that the app is definitely broken. The heap addresses it passes to HeapReAlloc() from the "cracker" worker thread are from an internal buffer / area in the .data section of the main executable. There is no code path that could lead to a real heap address getting passed. It's simply broken app code.
The Windows NT heap manager changed a lot between Windows NT/XP and Windows Vista/7+. The reason why this app doesn't work under Windows 7+ is simply that the heap manager no longer tolerates these bugged applications. Wine returning NULL in this case is perfectly within the documented/tested behaviour of newer Windows versions. I doubt that MS provides heap manager shims that can restore the old behaviour on Vista+
Anyway, I hacked Wine's 'ntdll.RtlReAllocateHeap' to return the same pointer in erroneous case as well (with last error set) and the app works:

But that's not what Windows Vista/7+ does. I see no point in implementing the old heap manager behaviour to cater broken apps.
I'm resolving this ticket as 'WONTFIX'. If there are more apps that rely on this brokenness then we might reconsider it.
