Summary: Pegasus Mail: program closes when sub-program closes Product: Wine Version: 0.9.47. Platform: PC URL: http://www.pmail.com/downloads_maine_t.htm OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jbarntt@aracnet.com CC: jbarntt@aracnet.com
Version to look at is 4.41, a free download.
This email app does a normal shutdown whenever the editor is closed, e.g., after a new email is sent. This is not normal behaviour. In Windows the app stays open, so that one can continue sending, receiving, reading, writing email, etc.
In old versions of wine, this error doesn't happen, (ver. 20050830). The regression error occurs as early as 0.9.20. Based on posts to the wine appdb for this app, it is likely that the regression error ocurred >=0.9.14.
The editor in Pmail was not written by the developer and maintainer, David Harris, but rather licensed by him. Recent wine code seems to interpret an ordinary call to close the editor as a call to close the program itself.
When Pmail starts, a 0 byte file, mailbox.lck is created in the mail box of the user. When the user closes the program normally, this file is deleted.
Since the shutdown regression error deletes the lock file, I conclude the call to close the editor is being misinterpreted by wine as a call to shutdown Pmail.
Joel Barnett New super maintainer for Pegasus Mail
p.s. - I'm new at this, please forgive me if my report is funky. I did check bugzilla and didn't find anything relevant.

On restarting my machine the following day Pegasus now appears to work correctly.
Mail sends correctly and selective download also works.
I tested this for five separate mail send functions as well as a number of header downloads with some selected for deletion and others selected for download.
Pegasus remained functioning throughout.

Today, Monday 28 January 2008 Pegasus is now shutting down again when I send mail or do a selective download.
Why this should be I don't know, same machine, same pegasus, no extra updates.
Regretfully it seems this has not been resolved.

I'm using Pegasus 4.31 (Haven't upgraded due to machine setup), Ubuntu 8.04 fully up to date and Wine 1.0-rc1
Pegasus still shuts down when an email is sent or an email header is selected for full download.
Strangely, when I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and loaded Pegasus it all worked fine, great thought I untill I rebooted then the same problem. I reported a similar situation within this thread, that too was after an upgrade where initially it appeared to work and then after a restart started the shut down problem again.
Being eratic this is difficult to resolve.

It would be helpful for a pointer to an example on how this actually works on a Linux workstation. I've tried running the program with winedbg rather than wine but I have no errors our any other output when the program goes away. It implies that there should be some sort of error logging someplace when there is an error, but it's not all that clear to me how this works.

I forgot to mention, a normal shut down give you exactly the same message stream so i doubt that Wine even sees this as a problem with their DLL implementations.

I'm not some kid that puts him system out for the script kiddies and bad guys to get. I'm not so paranoid that I believe that everyone is out to get me and I've never had any virus attack any system of mine, including all versions of Windows.
Could you be specific about how Wine gets broken when I run as root. Are you telling me that Wine cannot be run as root? Nothing in the link you gave me shows any reason that Wine does not run as root and in fact it does.
In addition, I doubt seriously that the bug we are currently discussing has anything at all to do with the user since all users get the same type of error.

--- Comment #27 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2008-05-29 23:43:19 --- Running big gui apps, especially under Wine, is considered bad practice. Especially email programs. Makes it a lot easier to attack your system. It's difficult for those of us who care about security to see past this glaringly dangerous practice on your part to get to your question. Normally, the folks who run Wine as root do it out of ignorance, and we try to guide them to safer practices before helping them with their problem.
Doing 'sudo wine ...' can screw up your ~/.wine directory such that it can't be used as yourself anymore, because it is contaminated with files owned by root. Recovering requires a chown -R or removing .wine and letting wine recreate it.
If you want to keep running wine as root for no reason, go ahead, but I can't bring myself to help you in that case, sorry.

Right, but I was explaining that I can't help him for personal reasons if he persists in running wine in an unsafe way.
Why do you consider what I'm doing unsafe when you really do not know how I am setup? I'm running a Linux system behind a firewall and router connecting only to mail servers that are also behind that firewall/router setup. When you connect to ubunto-tstephenson.com you are not connecting to my Linux system, you are connecting to a router that connects to another system.
If this is unsafe then wine is inherently unsafe. In this case Pegasus Mail has no connection outside of Linux at all and is not even using TCP/IP. The mail is delivered by a SMTP host directly to a new mail directory and when sending the mail is written as a file into a queue directory.
Now can you help us solve this problem with Wine shutting down Pegasus Mail when it send a message?

Strangely though and I've had this false hope before with wine upgrades, when I upgrade wine and then run pegasus for the first time pegasus works fine, it does not shut down when any sub-windows are closed.
The moment I close pegasus and then subsequently run it the problem returns and continues.

Yes, that behaviour is puzzling - I have not noticed it myself but will check next time I upgrade.
I am also puzzled by the fact that Lei Zhang's revert patch submission seems to be going nowhere. I hope that we Pmail devotees are not being punished because one of us confessed to running wine as root. I always run wine as normal user.

I confirm the shut down of Pegasus when closing some windows (compose, folder(ctrl-L), user-lookup (F2), telephone message (toolbar), donate (toolbar), current login (F4), etc...), but with other windows there is no problem (help, new mail (Ctrl-N), preference, address book, etc...)
The way we close the window doesn't matter (close button, button "cancel", right-click on windows bar), the result is always the same.

However it appears the way Pegasus Mail is setup does affect the Wine close bug. When I run in the preview mode the closing of the windows is not treated by Wine as a close window and close program. I checked this with both the new WinPMail public beta 1 and v4.41
Ubuntu v8.04 and Wine v1.1.6

Not here, the behavior is still the same either in preview mode or in list mode. If I go in preview mode, the closing of the same windows (as defined in my former msg) still lead to an exit of the program. (it is a full exit with saving of windows state and removal of the lock-file, different from sending a SIGTERM on the pegasus' process)
The point is : I have Wine 1.0, I cannot test with 1.1.6 since I have a dependency problem ( libldap2 (>= 2.1.17-1) ) that I cannot manage to resolve (even after install of libldap-devel or libldap-2.4-2 and slapd)

--- Comment #53 from sebas sbstst@yahoo.com 2008-10-15 05:06:31 --- Here is a test :
- Delete all those files : newcache.pm - mailbox.pm - hierarch.pm - folstate.pm - cache.pm - desktop.pm0 -state.pmj (they are files used by Pegasus to remember settings, they are automatically recreated if missing)
- Open Pegasus, compose msg, cancel.(=> exit program) All the files have been recreated, except desktop.pm0
Now, erase them again, open Pegasus and make a normal exit, they are all recreated, even desktop.pm0
In the very same way, the time stamp of desktop.pm0 is modified on a normal exit but not on a buggy exit.
So the problem is probably during or just before or because the writing of desktop.pm0
Other test : Open Lookup User (F2), compose msg, cancel (=> buggy exit) Reopen Pegasus, no way to get rid of lookup user window, pegasus exits without remembering we have closed this window.
To get rid of it, the only solution I found is to manually delete desktop.pm0
So buggy exit is not equal to a normal exit, it performs most of the exit tasks, but not all of them.
Best regards

Does not happen for me when using the preview mode.
Closing sending dialog also sometimes shuts down Pmail.

Closing other windows do not abort Pmail.
I have been using the Preview mode since sending a message from the Preview mode does not cause Pegasus Mail to close on sending. Obviously the closing of a windows in the Preview mode is done somewhat differently than is done when using the Classic mode. Could you check this out on your setup?

Whether this Wine bug can be worked-around by using some special mode in a beta version of Pmail is IMHO irrelevant. It would surely be better to port Pmail to Linux directly than to alter it to work in the current release of Wine?
The fact that the bug was not present in earlier versions of Wine suggests that it could be squashed: Lei Zhang has already submitted a revert patch at #40 above.

Might be relevant for someone trying to figure out the difference between the program closing and not closing on send using Wine debug. Just might point out exactly what Windows call is not being properly handled by Wine. Not something that I can do since my Linux/Ubuntu skills are minimal. ;-)

Having the app close is only an anoyance. Lack of secure SMTP capability prevents using pmail with some SMTP servers, including gmail. As more mail servers are configured to require secure SMTP, this problem affects more users.
If you experience the pmail secure SMTL (ssl) bug, please report it and vote for getting it fixed. For some reason its status has remained at "unconfirmed", although it has been reported by several users.
