I usually use medium hinting and antialiasing, with no subpixel hinting. The preferred way to render fonts is stored in ~/.fonts.conf. Wine should either use the settings there (preferred) or let the user configure the settings. Autodetecting something and/ or guessing settings won't cut it if you opt for good integration.
