I apt-get installed necessary packages to get rid of the "configure" warnings at the end of the ./configure --verbose output. I got rid of all the potentially relevant ones (e.g. I didn't bother with CUPS) but to no avail.
I ultimately "solved" the problem two different ways: I set up apache to work as a proxy server (which got Firefox and Opera working) ...and then I got tired of problems like this (with Wine, and with other software) and switched back to 32 bit linux. I've had no problems whatsoever with Wine on 32-bit.
