Summary: Skype 5.3: Not detecting any sound. Product: Wine Version: 1.3.23 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: karlmk@hotmail.com
When installing Skype as described in my appdb entry (download .exe, run, find .msi install that) Skype does not detect any soundcard or sound resources. The only entry in Skype's Audio settings are "default" but nothing comes out or goes in.
I should mention that during the program launch, it experiences one crash (crash report box) and one access violation (small access violation box). I'll try and find/create bugs for those cases as well.
Apart from Skype not detecting any sound resources (and trying to display the default start screen in Firefox) it works more or less flawless, I'd say 90%, and if we can get this bug fixed, then it would be really damn close to 100% functionality.
Yes, I know that there is a Linux client, but this is nothing short of a shame when it comes to features.
Well, there are a LOT of messages that pops up in console when this application is launched, I'll give you a way to reproduce this bug instead of attaching a lot of useless logs. Of course if you need anything from me with regards to zero in on this bug I'm more than happy to accommodate.
1. Download from skype.com the windows client. 2. Start the installer, and when it is done with the downloading it freezes/halts. 3. Kill it/Exit it. 4. Find Skype.msi in .wine/drive_c/users/Public/Application\ Data/Skype/{D6F879CC-59D6-4D4B-AE9B-D761E48D25ED}/ and run it with "msiexec /i Skype.msi" 5. Log in, check sound preferences, only "default" is displayed.

--- Comment #1 from Karl M karlmk@hotmail.com 2011-08-05 09:32:23 CDT --- Created an attachment (id=35821) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=35821) Terminal output from starting Skype and automatically logging in.
This is the log from running env WINEPREFIX="/home/karl/.wine" wine C:\Program\ Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe &> terminal_output.txt and will hopefully give some pointers as to why Skype does not detect any sound sources or emitters.

--- Comment #2 from Karl M karlmk@hotmail.com 2011-08-05 09:34:05 CDT --- I would be more than happy to run any tests, or run it again with additional WINEDEBUG environment variables if that is needed.

--- Comment #3 from Karl M karlmk@hotmail.com 2011-08-23 19:11:45 CDT --- Tried this again with current git wine-1.3.26-168-g6ee95c7, and I get the the same results. Anything I can do to try and get Skype to detect some speakers and microphones? When I go into winecfg and Audio and Test Sound, I hear the sound.

--- Comment #4 from Karl M karlmk@hotmail.com 2011-08-31 18:01:24 CDT --- A much simpler way to test this (guessing it is the same bug) is to download Skype 5.2.60.113 from http://www.oldapps.com/skype.php?app=0750fc9269ec32f685338e6841160c24 as that one installs.
After it is installed (you get some segfaults, and firefox opens with the home page of the skype client etc.) you go to Tools -> Options -> Audio Settings, and you only see "None" as the device for Speakers and Microphone.

--- Comment #5 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com 2012-03-23 14:08:31 CDT --- Hi Karl,
Is this still a problem with Wine 1.4 or later? I wasn't able to get the Skype version you linked to work very well, it kept crashing before I could log in. If it is, can you include a log with the debug channels from http://wiki.winehq.org/Sound?

Can you please say the exact wine version, Skype download URL and distro you are using, and how *exactly* you made it run under Wine (preferably starting with a new fresh clean WINEPREFIX)?

Which means I will keep rejecting such results in AppDB since you are using a hacked Skype version.
Wine's bugzilla and AppDB are only for original applications if not specifically stated otherwise (e.g. in case of DRM protected games which need their copy protection to be disabled to be run successfully under Wine).
