Bug ID: 42075 Summary: Amazon Kindle login fails Product: Wine Version: 2.0-rc3 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: ybyt4t@gmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 56574 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=56574 wine console output when running kindle
Tried to install Kindle 1.16 as my older version didn't work anymore with wine 2.0.
When I enter my Amazon account data (Mail/Pass) an popup opens with this message:
'Registration failed. Please try again [99]'
Didn't see anything overly suspicious in the console output (see attachment), and it even happens on a fresh .wine directory (win32 mode).
I tried this Kindle version with wine 2.0rc3:
md5sum KindleForPC-installer-1.16.44025.exe
92f8b55a17a632e77bcd94f7d7e767fc KindleForPC-installer-1.16.44025.exe
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42075
--- Comment #1 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- I can't reproduce this; 1.16.44025 happens to the be the version of Kindle for PC I already have installed, and it's still working fine here in 2.0-rc3.
What was the exact command you used to start Kindle for PC, and what overrides do you have set?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42075
--- Comment #2 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- Also, are you using the workarounds for bug 29045 and bug 35041? If not, this is probably a duplicate of one of those.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42075
--- Comment #3 from ybyt4t@gmail.com ybyt4t@gmail.com --- What it did was this:
# rm -rf ~/.wine # WINEARCH=win32 wine ~/Downloads/KindleForPC-installer-1.16.44025.exe # WINEDEBUG=warn+all wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Amazon/Kindle/Kindle.exe
& kindle-log-161225.txt
While the last command was running I tried to enter Amazon credentials.
Microsoft fonts are installed systemwide at /usr/share/fonts/TTF. taskset -c 0 has no noticeable effect.
It doesn't look to me like one 29045 and 35041. The application does not crash, it just refuses to log in.

Microsoft fonts are installed systemwide at /usr/share/fonts/TTF.
How do you know?
Still worth to test winetricks -q corefonts or allfonts.

# WINEDEBUG=warn+all wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Amazon/Kindle/Kindle.exe >& kindle-log-161225.txt
A # prompt normally indicates you are running as root. You shouldn't. https://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#Should_I_run_Wine_as_root.3F
You are also not starting the app correctly. When using the full unix-style path, you need to use wine start /unix so Wine can set the working directory. If you don't, apps that expect to be started from the directory in which they are installed will fail. https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide#Using_wine_start
Try again in a clean wineprefix as a normal user with wine start /unix.

Don't worry. I didn't. There is only a '#' because I added it manually before posting my commands in here.

Ah, okay. I didn't know that was the expected thing to do. In any case previously it worked fine for Kindle without it.
Try again in a clean wineprefix as a normal user with wine start /unix.
Tried it. Still the same.

--- Comment #8 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- What distro are you on, and are you using a Wine binary package or did you build it yourself? And is the wineprefix on a native Linux partition on a local drive?

--- Comment #9 from ybyt4t@gmail.com ybyt4t@gmail.com --- (In reply to Rosanne DiMesio from comment #8)
What distro are you on, and are you using a Wine binary package or did you build it yourself?
It's Arch and I'm using the distro package. The package version is 2.0rc3-1. As is common for Arch it appears to be very close to upstream.
And is the wineprefix on a native Linux partition on a local drive?
Yes it is a local btrfs. Mount options are nothing special (rw,noatime,ssd,space_cache).

--- Comment #10 from ybyt4t@gmail.com ybyt4t@gmail.com --- Tried it again today (without many notable changes to the system) and now it works again. Might have been a temporary glitch, maybe caused by Amazon's servers. Anyway, thanks for trying to help.
