Bug ID: 40288 Summary: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - Game won't start (black screen) Product: Wine Version: 1.9.4 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: winehq@iooioio.orion.uberspace.de Distribution: Other
Created attachment 53929 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=53929 Console output
When attempting to launch the Steam version of "The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky" only a black screen appears.
Since it is possible to work around this issue by disabling the intro videos in the game's config tool, I presume this bug is video/codec related and should probably be linked to some other bug with more details on the true source of the symptoms described here.
I have attached the console output.

These two lines are rather interesting:
err:quartz:GetClassMediaFile Media class not found err:quartz:GetClassMediaFile Media class not found
Can you run the following command:
$winetricks quartz
The reason I ask is because the two lines from your console output seem to suggest you don't have quartz installed on your system.

--- Comment #2 from Josh winehq@iooioio.orion.uberspace.de --- Interesting. I installed quartz via winetricks and though at first it appears that nothing has changed, after a few seconds the game crashes entirely due to a stack overflow.
I am attaching the new console output. Hopefully it is more helpful this time.

According to a comment here https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=30736 you'll also need amstream. Can you try "winetricks amstream" and see where that gets you?

This time no crash. The screen is still black and there is no sound but the Steam overlay is available and pressing escape a couple of times brings up the main menu.

Try running:
$wine Configure.exe
from your Legend of Heroes directory and disable the logo and the opening movie.
I did this with the GOG version of the game and I've been playing the game for about 3 hours now.

Can confirm this is an issue with 1.9.7 as well. It seems like GStreamer is demanding some sort of plug-in but which one, I don't know as I have all the available plug-ins installed via my distro. Backtrace attached.
My distro: Antergos x86_64 (this distro uses all the Arch repos and nothing else) I have all available 32 and 64-bit gstreamer plug-ins:
lib32-gst-plugins-base 1.6.3-1 lib32-gst-plugins-base-libs 1.6.3-1 lib32-gst-plugins-good 1.6.3-1
gst-libav 1.6.3-3 (this plug-in provides gst-ffmpeg-1.8.0-1, I installed the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of this plug-in to no effect) gst-plugins-bad 1.6.3-6 gst-plugins-base 1.6.3-1 gst-plugins-good 1.6.3-1 gst-plugins-ugly 1.6.3-1 gstreamer-vaapi 1.6.0-1 gstreamer0.10-bad-plugins 0.10.23-14 gstreamer0.10-base-plugins 0.10.36-3 gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg 0.10.13-2 gstreamer0.10-good-plugins 0.10.31-10 gstreamer0.10-ugly-plugins 0.10.19-16

I still get the same symptoms (black screen, pressing escape a few times eventually leads to main menu) but the output seems to indicate that I'm missing a gstreamer plugin.
Here are my installed packages gstreamer:
gir1.2-gstreamer-1.0:amd64 gstreamer1.0-alsa:amd64 gstreamer1.0-clutter-3.0:amd64 gstreamer1.0-fluendo-mp3:amd64 gstreamer1.0-gl:amd64 gstreamer1.0-gtk3:amd64 gstreamer1.0-libav:amd64 gstreamer1.0-nice:amd64 gstreamer1.0-packagekit gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:amd64 gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:amd64 gstreamer1.0-plugins-base:i386 gstreamer1.0-plugins-base-apps gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:amd64 gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly:amd64 gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio:amd64 gstreamer1.0-tools gstreamer1.0-vaapi:amd64 gstreamer1.0-x:amd64 libgstreamer-gl1.0-0:amd64 libgstreamer-plugins-bad1.0-0:amd64 libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0:amd64 libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0:i386 libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-dev:amd64 libgstreamer-plugins-good1.0-0:amd64 libgstreamer1.0-0:amd64 libgstreamer1.0-0:i386 libgstreamer1.0-dev:amd64

You need to install the 32-bit version of all these packages.
Well, not all of them, but generally gstreamer1.0-plugins-base, -good, -bad, -ugly and gstreamer1.0-libav are the ones (indirectly) used by Wine.

I was able to install 32 bit packages of the following:
- gstreamer1.0-plugins-base - gstreamer1.0-plugins-good - gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly
But the problem still persists.
Unfortunately attempting to install gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad or gstreamer1.0-libav in their 32 bit variants results in unresolvable dependencies by apt.

I think unless you manage to fix that, you might be out of luck. It needs a plugin for video/mpeg and IIRC that is in -bad.

It seems I was wrong and you will need -libav, but of course it would be best to have both of them.
