The 12/28/2009 version of Kindle does not work.  Ubuntu Forums (link above) has
a big discussion about how it fails.  The beta version works (with minor issues
on the front page fonts not showing properly unless the mode is set to Win98).

This issue was seen with both 1.0.1 as well as 1.1.35 in Ubuntu.

Oh, and fixmes don't necessarily indicate where the problem lies.  Resetting
component until feedback about either patch is given.

I have tested the latest Kindle version and it is not working but the error is
not the same. Details:

* Kindle app: 6540984 bytes, latest from Amazon (May/17/2010)
* Wine configured as Win98 
* Ubuntu 9.10
* Wine 1.1.44
* See attachment "Kindle installation log" for details

The application is installed but the following message is displayed at the end
of installation process:

"Kindle for PC ins Installed, but failed to launch. Please contact your
administrator".

If you try to run it from menu the application is showed at task bar but it
disappears after some seconds. From command line it is possible to see an error
related to timezone information (see attachment Kindle execution log)

in "Windows XP" mode ...

it calls WinVerifyTrust(WINTRUST_ACTION_GENERIC_VERIFY_V2), which returns 0 aka
"OK".

but it does seem only partially happy with this result.

It seems to check the Certificate WinVerifyTrust used for verification, and is
not happy with that one for some reason.

I can verify the patch fixes the problem (at least for me).

I applied to trunk and was able to run stock Kindle for PC with no problems.

It would be great if this could be committed.

the patch was found too be too hacky.

I was trying a better one, but am not happy with it either yet. The code is way
too hackish already :(
