Bug #: 31036 Summary: Crusader Kings 2 1.06 crashes at startup Product: Wine Version: 1.5.6 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: zoku88@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 40748 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=40748 Backtrace
After patching to 1.06, Crusader Kings 2 crashes at startup.
Before this patch, the game worked almost perfectly.
For clarification, I believe it is different from this bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30540, since that version works perfectly for me.
I have attached a backtrace.

I'm experiencing the same crash.
I'm running debian SID amd64 and a hand compiled 1.3.34 wine. I'll try the latest wine and report.

With wine 1.5.7, Crusader Kings II still crashes and I get a similar backtrace. I think the crash is related to this error message: err:heap:validate_block_pointer Heap 0x1ca0000: bad flags 00000001 for in-use arena 0x67319af8 And IMO this bug is somewhat similar to another bug which has been fixed and closed by now: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29224.
BTW, I've installed Crusader Kings 2 on a separate, clean wineprefix and the only dll overrides present are the ones installed by winetricks d3dx9 vcrun2010, in particular msvcr100 (native, builtin).

--- Comment #3 from Vítor Ferreira vitor.dominor@gmail.com 2012-06-27 20:45:44 CDT --- Just like in http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29224, by running CK2 with WINEDEBUG="warn+heap", the game doesn't crash and seems to run normally.

--- Comment #4 from Issam Mehssani i.mehssani@gmail.com 2012-06-28 11:55:06 CDT --- I can confirm the bug is present with wine 1.5.7 and that setting WINEDEBUG="warn+heap" is enough for the game to run.

--- Comment #5 from Mykal Valentine zoku88@gmail.com 2012-06-28 12:28:02 CDT --- I can also confirm that when I do 'WINEDEBUG="warn+heap", the game successfully starts up.
Also, filing this as 1.5.6 was a mistake, since my version is actually 1.5.7. I forgot that I updated :-/ I'll correct the version to be more correct...

--- Comment #6 from Vítor Ferreira vitor.dominor@gmail.com 2012-06-28 13:20:07 CDT --- However, I've noticed while playing, that the game slows down significantly during the loading phases (starting new game/loading save game, going back to main menu, ...) and the more times you reload or you switch between the main menu and a game, the longer each loading phase takes.

--- Comment #9 from Marc m.even@neuf.fr 2012-06-30 09:25:09 CDT --- Hum, i'm newbie on Linux (~ 1 year), maybe too difficult for me :)
But i will try, if someone more experienced could do it too, he does not hesitate.
Here is additional information after various tests anyway :
Works (except terrain flickering) on Wine 1.4 ==> Wine 1.5.6.
On Wine 1.5.7, big slowndown ( FPS/2~3 on map ingame, not start screen ), longer loading, information panel mini freeze (~2/3 sec for open).
Same install, same prefixe.
Wineprefix 32 Bits clean with winetricks d3dx9 vcrun2010.
Kubuntu 12.04 KDE 4.8.4 4 go DDR 3 Nvidia GTX 460 with proprietary driver (302.17) MAUDIO audiophile 2496

--- Comment #10 from Mykal Valentine zoku88@gmail.com 2012-06-30 13:24:38 CDT --- That's interesting since I don't see that problem at all (the slowdown, I mean.) Could be because of our different gfx cards.
You might want to file a new bug and put it under Regressions once you find which git commit makes you see the performance drop. Just for better bug tracking.

--- Comment #11 from Vítor Ferreira vitor.dominor@gmail.com 2012-06-30 23:33:43 CDT --- I myself wasn't reporting a general slowdown in the game, just increasingly longer loading times when the game is doing major loading tasks like loading a save game or especially going back to the main menu.from the in-game map. Usually it takes two or three such loading attempts to make the game apparently unresponsive. So the WINEDEBUG="warn+heap" workaround allows the game at version 1.06 to run well, except that when the game loads something like in those two cases, eventually it comes to a halt.
Also, I've tried to get more information about the crash. The workaround itself does not yield any heap error or warning messages. I've also tried doing winetricks heapcheck to enable the GlobalFlag and it also doesn't give any heap messages. Setting WINEDEBUG="+heap" makes loading the game unbearinbly slow (in more than an half-hour, the game did not show its initial loading screen). Finally, running CK2 on valgrind (with a custom compiled wine 1.5.7 for valgrind) does yield some info about heap usage. Unfortunately, it is hard to associate any of the messages with the crash, since like in the previous attempts the game does not crash at "Creating Borders". How can we debug the crash, in order to find the offending code in order to patch it?

--- Comment #12 from Vadim Peretokin vperetokin@gmail.com 2012-07-12 20:16:51 CDT --- I can confirm that the game does not launch anymore without those flags. With those flags, on the first launch it will get stuck creating checksums - you have to kill the game, launch it again - but then then it will run rather slow even on a beastly machine.

--- Comment #15 from Vadim Peretokin vperetokin@gmail.com 2012-07-13 17:05:44 CDT --- There does not seem to be a consensus on how to exactly do that - the audio tab of winecfg does not help in that regard. I tried two methods:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=mmdevapi= wine '/home/vadi/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/crusader kings ii/ck2.exe'
This disabled sound, but the game still crashed.
Another thing I tried was:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=winealsa.drv=d wine '/home/vadi/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/crusader kings ii/ck2.exe'
Which did not disable sound, and it crashed anyway.

--- Comment #16 from Peter Alfredsen peter.alfredsen@gmail.com 2012-08-22 01:39:03 CDT --- I resolved all crashes I had by running $RANDOM_BINARY called 4gb_patch.exe on ck2.exe. It flips a flag in the binary that lets it use the full 4gb address space available. I can even turn on sound now. Still have to run with WINEDEBUG="warn+heap" though.

It would be neat if this was all it took to solve the crash you're seeing. I've played for 8 hours straight with no crashes.

--- Comment #17 from EqX Equidamoid@GMail.com 2012-12-01 15:39:37 CST --- I'm experiencing the same crash as in the first backtrace.
Backtrace (10.08 KB, text/plain) 2012-06-27 02:55 CDT, Mykal Valentine
4gb parch doesn't help. The game is installed into clean wineprefix. Wine 1.5.17, 1.5.18. Crusaders King version 1.08
Gentoo, x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-304.64 x11-base/xorg-server-1.13.0-r1
BTW I had 1.06 and it worked fine a long time ago. The same installation started crashing after some time and several updates installed (I suspect nvidia drivers and wine itself).
Any hints which wine version I can check?

--- Comment #20 from Issam Mehssani i.mehssani@gmail.com --- I don't know WINE's policy on this, but it might be not worth it to continue work on this bug (if it's the only game affected). The game now has a native linux version.

--- Comment #21 from Vadim Peretokin vperetokin@gmail.com --- I think they still continue working on making it work, but yes, the game does have a native version now.
