Summary: Failed to connect to the mount manager error in winecfg Product: Wine Version: 1.1.16 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jsfrerot@egliseespoir.com
Created an attachment (id=19849) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=19849) screen shot of the error
After a fresh install of ubuntu x64 and installing wine 1.1.16~winehq0~ubuntu~8.10-0ubuntu1, winecfg gives an error when going to the "Drives" tab. "Failed to connect to the mount manager", see picture attached.
I tried to launch it from the command line and here is what I saw: [jsfrerot@jsfrerot-desktop ~]$ winecfg err:process:__wine_kernel_init boot event wait timed out err:winecfg:open_mountmgr failed to open mount manager err 2
I copied the .wine folder from a 32bit ubuntu and the drives were shown in the tab (no errors with the mount manager)

I downloaded the git and compiled on my AMD64 ubuntu installation and I still have the same problem.

--- Comment #3 from Jean-Sébastien Frerot jsfrerot@egliseespoir.com 2009-03-13 08:24:23 --- Ok, I tried to investigate more on this as my wine installation is still not working. I found that the only difference between my .wine folder create by a 32 bits ubuntu os and a 64 ubuntu os are these 3 files: system.reg, userdef.reg and user.reg. Replacing the files from the 32 bits installation into my 64 bits installation, I found that the drives are now shown in "Drives" tab. The file that fixed the problem is system.reg and the lines that were missing in this file are:
[System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MountMgr] 1216050542 "Description"="Device mounting service" "DisplayName"="Mount Manager" "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "ImagePath"="C:\windows\system32\drivers\mountmgr.sys" "ObjectName"="LocalSystem" "Start"=dword:00000002 "Type"=dword:00000001
I noticed that there is a lot more missing section in the system.reg generated by the 64 bits Ubuntu installation. So my guess is that there is a problem when generating these files on a 64 bits installation.

Wow, nevermind. My issue was not related; MacPorts and Fink both pollute one's Mac with libraries everywhere. Sorry for the bugspam.

Looks like that something is broken in your Wine setup, the initial Wine registry is missing important information.
'rm -rf ~/.wine', run 'wine notepad' and check the regsitry again.
I have been having the same issue running Jaunty x64. Running the notepad from Applications -> Wine -> Programs fixed the problem without having to remove and re-construct the ~/.wine file structure. mountmgr now works in winecfg.
Here is what shows up on the console (output is short, so I'm putting it inline):

--- Comment #10 from Mihail Balabin mbalabin@googlemail.com 2009-05-11 13:14:35 --- I've encountered the same error with wine-1.1.21 on Debian Squeeze/AMD64. To reproduce the error remove the ~/.wine folder and run "wine notepad.exe" to recreate ~/.wine directory. The directory is created, but it's almost empty: there are no any .dll or .sys files. Corresponding entries in system.reg are missing too. If I run winecfg and switch to the "Drives" tab I see the error message "Failed to connect to the mount manager, the drive configuration cannot be edited." (as in http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=19849). Also, there is a message "err:winecfg:open_mountmgr failed to open mount manager err 2" in console. Running wineprefixcreate doesn't fix the problem. What additional information should I provide?

--- Comment #11 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2009-05-11 22:59:05 --- Is there any errors on console when you create a new ~/.wine? Also what happens if you run from console (please locate wine.inf first): wine rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 wine.inf
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17662
--- Comment #12 from Mihail Balabin mbalabin@googlemail.com 2009-05-12 00:32:58 --- I see no error messages when creating new ~/.wine, just the usual message "wine: created the configuration directory '/home/mbalabin/.wine'".
"wine rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 wine.inf" behaves quite strange. wine.inf is located in /usr/share/wine on my system. If I run "cd /usr/share/wine && wine rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 wine.inf" the same almost empty ~/.wine is created; the only message I see on console is "wine: created the configuration directory '/home/mbalabin/.wine'". But if I run "wine rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 /usr/share/wine/wine.inf" or even "cd /usr/share/wine && wine rundll32 setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 128 ./wine.inf" then correct ~/.wine directory is created: it has a lot of .dll and .sys files (including mountmgr.sys of course). The messages I see on console are "wine: created the configuration directory '/home/mbalabin/.wine' Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled."

--- Comment #20 from Mihail Balabin mbalabin@googlemail.com 2009-05-12 10:45:46 --- I've downloaded wine-1.1.21 sources and compiled them: CC=gcc-4.1 ./configure --without-freetype make depend make -j2
Then I've tried to start wine in two ways: "./wine notepad.exe" and "make install && /usr/local/bin/wine notepad.exe". In both cases ~/.wine was created correctly.
I guess, it's possible that binary package is broken. I use binary packages for 64-bit Ubuntu Intrepid from http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/ (see the binary downloads section on winehq.org). It looks like the original bug's reporter used the same packages.

--- Comment #30 from Mugsy ambrosia_1@dslextreme.com 2010-08-04 13:33:40 --- Is this thread closed? I am having this problem but do not see a fix listed.
I am running 32bit Wine under 32bit Ubuntu 10.0.4. The program was running just fine the last time I used it a few days ago.
Not sure what changed in between, but now, when I launch the Wine Configuration, after about a minutes delay, I get an error message with Close button. When I close and rerun the Wine Config, after about two minutes, the tabbed config page opens, but when I click on the "Drives" tab, it says: "Failed to connect to the mount manager, the drive configuration cannot be edited."
I can open "Notepad.exe", which also takes about a minute to load/run.
I tried uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling Wine from the Synaptic Package Manager, only to get the same result.
Is there a fix to this problem?
