My problems seemed to be slightly different. I assumed "intro movie" to be some campaign cutscene. In addition my backtraces were different. Thus I reposted my problems as bug#23980 and bug#23981.

You can force the game to windowed mode (without having to tweak for 16bpp), which prevents the crash.
"sudtest.ini" -> "FullScreen=0"
There is also "VideoMode=x" to play with.
