Bug #: 29128 Summary: L.A. Noire fails to launch Product: Wine Version: 1.3.33 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: peanuthead_069@yahoo.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 37529 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=37529 Terminal log of launch attempt.
Well, since no one seems to have tested this game yet, I decided to take matters into my own hands. The installer now works on 1.3.33, but the game itself doesn't. All the necessary dependencies are installed already, but still even the mandatory patch required to activate and launch the game doesn't work. Even the no-spaces workaround when installing the game showed no signs of the Noire launching.

--- Comment #1 from Blake Gripling peanuthead_069@yahoo.com 2011-11-19 05:12:03 CST --- Oh, and another thing: I think it had something to do with LAN's GameShield DRM, similar to bug 23090.

Anyhow, I selected to install .Net 3.5 using winetricks and it installed .Net 2.0 and .Net 3.0
During the .Net 3.0 installation it gave me an error message and uninstalled itself and quit.
But looks like I got a little further now.

Actually this could be a real problem it fails on. You could try a simple duplicate call at least to return valid token handle just to be sure it allows application to go a bit further.

And now I'm getting a segfault from somewhere in wine code.

If I run with +relay, it puts up a dialog that says "Exception EOleError in module LANoire.exe at 0001A13B.\r\nType information missing for class TYummyPatcherInterface." http://support.rockstargames.com/entries/20515453-l-a-noire-pc-system-requir... mentions that the product uses http://www.softwareshield.com/Product/IronWrap.aspx, and I guess this is where wine is first screwing up. --- Comment #50 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2013-08-20 00:34:22 CDT --- Got around the install problem by using wine-1.4.1 (though I think 1.5.25 may have worked, too).
With no winetricks (well, vd=1024x768) and no .net installed, and today's git, wine LANoire.exe exits silently after a few seconds with err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7b811000
I then tried installing http://patches.rockstargames.com/prod/lan/fullpatches/LAN_Patch_2617_0_0_0.e... (sha1sum 4bfd626a94bd3727f9b8e8ca4d2e0a6656280889) Running LANoire.exe then complained that d3dx11_43.dll could not be found.
So I tried running LANLauncher again, and now it fails with System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'DownloadManager.ArvatoDownloader' from assembly 'LANPatcher, Version=1.0.4692.28260, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'. Trying 'winetricks dotnet35sp1' seems to have gotten past that (though maybe dotnet20 would have done?). Now the launcher seems happier, but complains about missing managed directx. 'winetricks directx9' made that happy; the launcher lets you click on 'launch' now, but then fails with "Failed to load library d3dx11_43.dll".
Well, ok. Guess I should have done 'winetricks d3dx11_43' sooner. Doing that lets you get past that problem. It sits on a neon sign splash screen (Rockstar Games Presents L.A. Noire; Loading...) for a long time; top shows: 31931 dank 20 0 12272 8672 760 R 86,2 0,1 0:44.23 wineserver 31995 dank 20 0 1814m 113m 20m S 31,5 1,9 0:26.46 LANoire.exe 32004 dank 20 0 1744m 10m 5760 S 29,8 0,2 0:14.19 LANoire.exe Evidently the game uses two threads during this long startup period.
I guess I'll let it run overnight to see if it loads. It's already racked up 5 minutes of CPU time on wineserver...

--- Comment #51 from Andrey Gusev andrey.goosev@gmail.com 2013-08-20 03:52:11 CDT --- Dan, for LANLauncher dotnet20 will be enough. Have the same message with d3dx11_43. Installed a patch 2617 manually, but then when I launched a generated LANPatcher it has been updated one more time again.

--- Comment #53 from Berillions berillions@gmail.com 2013-08-20 10:20:06 CDT --- I have the same thing with Max Payne 3. I have no crash when i launch the game and i have "MaxPayne3.exe" and "PlayMaxPayne3.exe" in my process list.
Dan, can you check if you are a file called "renderer.exe" in this folder "program files/Rockstar Games/Social Club".
If yes, i think to know why the game is not launched completly. I test MP3 on my Seven partition + "process monitor". When i launch MP3, i have this way : - PlayMaxPayne3.exe process is create - PlayMaxPayne3.exe create a process called MaxPayne3.exe - MaxPayne3.exe create a process called renderer.exe and the game is launched.
Renderer.exe is an application which allow to connect you to the Rockstar Game Social Club. Only after to connect you to the RGSC, the game is launch and run.
Why "renderer.exe" process is not create, i don't know. If i create a +process debug log, there is no trace about this executable.
A cr*ck exist for MP3 to pass the RGSC (by Reloaded) but for LA Noire, i don't know. But even with the crack and wine patched, MP3 crash at launch.

Actually, i "think" that there is a problem in Wine to launch "renderer.exe" because her process does not exist. (See my last comment)

I think this is something like a meta-bug.
Many of the problems reported here are also present for windows users and many of the fixes that work for windows users also work for wine users.
This implies that the game is pretty buggy by itself, but when users fail to start it on wine they don't realize that the bug is not a wine bug and end up writing in here.
Probably only the problem related to login in rockstar social club is a wine bug, since some users have managed to work around the bug using (unsupported) dxvk. (but similar problems are still present for windows users).

I try to click on the user sign in so I can type out my stuff, but I can't seem to click anything. Gonna try a crack and see if this helps.
I was managing to play without creating a social club account.
you should just skipping it or closing the login window (pressing esc or something like).

--- Comment #86 from Andrey Gusev andrey.goosev@gmail.com --- Most likely in DX9 mode you'll be able to login.

--- Comment #87 from Le Gluon du Net legluondunet@gmail.com --- After a lot of tests I finally found a method to play the steam version of this game on Linux.
I will explain you how even if it exceeds the scope of this discussion First you have to install Dotnet 3.5sp1 with winetricks: winetricks dotnet35sp1
Then download this specific Wine version: I obtained positive results ONLY with Lutris Wine TKG, I tested all Wine TKG version from 4 to 4.6 with success. I can not test with superior TKG version because Lutris stopped to provide them and I don't know how to compile them myself.
Last thing: I can launch the game only with a Lutris TKG Wine version AND the game should be set in DirectX 11 mode. In DirectX 9, the game simply doesn't launch.
I tried different other Wine version, more recent, without success.
The question now is: what piece of code in Lutris Wine TKG version from 4 to 4.6 make this game playable on Linux?
I searched to continue my tests with more recent TKG builds > 5.x but I don't know (for the moment) how to compile it my self and I didn't find binaries.
If you own the steam game, you could test my script install here: https://lutris.net/games/la-noire/
Hope this help.
