Summary: New Star Soccer 2010 crashes when starting a new career Product: Wine Version: 1.1.35 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: lminiero@gmail.com
New Star Soccer 2010 crashes when you try to start a new career. You can customize your profile correctly, but when you confirm your choices, and the database is created for you, halfway though the process Wine crashes. Everything else (main menu, game engine itself) works correctly. It has been verified (not by me) that loading an already saved game (e.g. saved in Windows) works fine, so the problem is in generating the savegame database. The game has a debug mode, which shows that the last operation printed on console (be it completed or still ongoing) is a 'DoLeagueElimination' (you can choose, in the customization process, which leagues you want to be accessible during the game). I'll attach a back trace.

This is a complete dump of the crash, reported by Wine on the console. You can also see some of the in-game logging (last one being DoLeagueElimination, and some OpenAL logging at the end).

A screenshot of the game crashing: it always crashes precisely at that progress.

I should have been more accurate: I'm using a 64bit distro, but I'm *not* using 64bit wine. I've been using wine for years and on tons of games in the past, and I've always used its i686 packages. Have you at least tried to install the demo?

The module list in the log you atatched in Comment #2 doesn't look right, all modules are marked as PE. What Wine package are you using? Try with clean ~/.wine.
I'm using the i686 packages of wine in fedora:
]$ rpm -q -a | grep wine wine-nas-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-capi-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-cms-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-common-1.1.35-1.fc12.noarch wine-pulseaudio-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-devel-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-core-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-alsa-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-debuginfo-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-twain-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-desktop-1.1.35-1.fc12.noarch wine-ldap-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-openal-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-fonts-1.1.35-1.fc12.noarch wine-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-jack-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-oss-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686 wine-esd-1.1.35-1.fc12.i686
no x86_64 package there... what is the PE related to?
I've tried both removing the ~/.wine folder and installing the game under a different prefix, no luck.

--- Comment #14 from Lorenzo lminiero@gmail.com 2010-01-03 06:44:55 --- You've got to be kidding me... is this really the way bugs are solved in Wine?
wine-pulseaudio is just pulseaudio support in the Audio drivers of Wine, and that package has been in Fedora since forever (or at least since pulseaudio has become the main audio engine of Fedora). I always choose Alsa rather than Pulseaudio in my drivers in winecfg anyway, or OSS when it seems to be a better solution. I've tried/played like 100 games in Wine so far, I guess I must have been very lucky considering how broken my system is assumed to be.
But if you've decided my system is broken without even trying to reproduce the bug yourself (which takes like 2 minutes) then that's ok, I'll just wait for it to be fixed indirectly in future versions of Wine.

--- Comment #16 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2010-01-03 07:18:11 --- If the Wine package you are using has any custom patches in it - that package can't be supported here, and all the problems with it must be reported to the package maintainer.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21215
--- Comment #17 from Lorenzo lminiero@gmail.com 2010-01-03 07:33:05 --- I'm not upset, just a bit dejected... I'm glad the bug was confirmed, though.
I understand your point on custom packages, which makes sense: anyway, that package is related to audio only, and audio doesn't give any issue (as I disable pulseaudio in Wine). Besides, the unsupported package is one of Fedora's mainstream packages: I don't know if they patched Wine in any way for their official release (they probably did, as usually do all distros). If so, then I guess Wine on Fedora can't get any support on here in general.

Please report to Fedora that their Wine package is broken and can't be supported here.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/AndreasBierfert/Wine doesn't list wine-pulseaudio as a part of the Wine package, so it's not clear where it comes from.

--- Comment #32 from winetest@luukku.com --- Tried 1st pure wine, then with same wineprefix wine-staging and staging bypass the crash location. I was able to get into game and even play sometime in football field.
wine 2.0rc5 and staging 2.rc5.
Any ideas what fixed this? One possibility is that second run on same prefix fixed it and it has nothing to do with staging. I would know if I used fresh prefix.

Doesn't work wine wine 2.7, but it doesnt seem to work now with wine-staging 2.7 either. Possible regression or I had unpure prefix or something similar before.
