Looks like this one is fixed in current git.
I cannot reproduce the issue in 1.6, 1.7.7 and 1.9.8 on Debian. Maybe it was an intermediary problem between the latest 1.7.x and 1.8...
Needs someone on OSX to ensure it was a problem and if it is fixed.

[HKCU\Software\Wine\Mac Driver] "OpenGLSurfaceMode"="transparent"
This didn't help, unfortunately. I did change the setting to "behind" just to check whether it was having any effect at all, which it did. It just didn't fix the problem.
