--- Comment #12 from Peter Petky ptg76@ukr.net 2013-02-12 16:09:41 CST --- Dear Austin, Raza and Zap I have this bug described in Bug 32132 - "Starcraft 2 crashes on startup"
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32457
--- Comment #13 from Raza debianuser4@gmail.com 2013-02-17 22:09:15 CST --- Hey guys, great news! I got it working. What I did was open winetricks and went to install dll and did remove everything option at the bottom. (make sure to move SC2 install out of your .wine folder if it's there before you do it because it'll literally remove anything in that folder. After that I opened up winetricks and installed vc2005 and 2008 (nothing else) and ran SC2 again and it worked.

Select the default wine prefix -> Delete all data and applications inside
If a clean WINEPREFIX fixes the issue, it's invalid.

Dear Raza, I followed, what You recommended: 1 - I cleared the PREFIX; 2 - I copied files back. So - then launcher runs perfectly and no game crash, but no visual output (the wine desktop is a Malievich's "Black square") with crackling sound. The only way to correctly quit the program is 2 or 3 times press [Esc].

Select the default wine prefix -> Delete all data and applications inside
So, what we have: Updated wine form version 1.5.23 to 1.5.24; Reinstalled game (the launcher updated the game to version 1.5.4); Clear WINEPRFIX just added vcrun2005 and vcrun2008. No crackling sound, the music seems ok. But the Wine desktop still a Malevich's "Black Square". No crash or error messages.

Looking up that error made me realize I ran it with "-opengl" at the end. Give that a try and see if it fixes the issue. I think it might considering it looks like a rendering issue.
I ran wine Starcraft \II.exe -opengl and wine Starcraft \II.exe -dx9single with the same message in conlole:
err:winediag:shader_generate_glsl_declarations The hardware does not support enough uniform components to run this shader, it may not render correctly.
I also ran both variants with SC2Switcher.exe with the same result (no result).
P.S.: in the very first attempt my system totally hanged up, so I needed to hardly reset the computer.

--- Comment #24 from Raza debianuser4@gmail.com 2013-02-19 07:49:02 CST --- If that didn't work then your GPU isn't strong enough to run sc2 or the drivers aren't working. Post your GPU info and try reinstalling the drivers.

--- Comment #26 from Peter Petky ptg76@ukr.net 2013-02-19 16:10:26 CST --- Gentlemen, I made the game ran after making a manual correction to Variables.txt. I have reduced the screen resolution to 1024x768.
height=768 width=1024
So, now it works, but the sound quality is poor. And there is the sound of intermittent crackle effect (I'm on Pulse Audio). Motions, scrolling are quite slow, but the game is playable. And just one more thing
Video card GPU.VendorID 4098 GPU.DeviceID 37888 GPU.DeviceDesc ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT GPU.DriverVersion 6.14.10.8681 GPU.VideoMemory 268,435,456 GPU.AGPMemory 268,435,456 GPU.VertexShader vs_2_0 GPU.PixelShader ps_2_0
I don't know why, the game identifies my video card (ATI Radeon HD 4250) as ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT.

--- Comment #27 from Peter Petky ptg76@ukr.net 2013-02-20 14:34:01 CST --- Today there was a software optimization an update to version 2.0.4. So, I turned off almost all visual effects of KDE and rebooted my PC. After that I ran the game: the music, sound effects are clear, the characters' speech understandable. And yes, I had to manually modify Variables.txt to reduce the screen resolution to 1024x768.
height=768 width=1024
It's a little slow (maybe because my video card is integrated to motherboard), but playable. P.S.: wine 1.5.24 (with virtual desktop emulation 1024x768), StarCraft II 2.0.4 (Universal - 2.0.4.24944)

--- Comment #28 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over 700 days. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.36 or newer) wine?
