Bug #: 31942 Summary: Office Professional 2003 Installer Crashes Almost Immediately Product: Wine Version: 1.5.1 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: abc.mikey@googlemail.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 42073 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=42073 Office Professional 2003 Installer
When running the installer for Office Professional 2003 it briefly shows a window which looks like it might have a progress bar in it and then crashes.
This may be a more general problem with a certain type of installer because when I tried working around the problem by using a custom install (which may not have been of any use) see:
https://office.microsoft.com/en-us/office-2003-resource-kit/custom-installat...
I tried installing the "Office 2003 Editions Resource Kit" (ork.exe) which appears to produce a very similar error and may be useful for testing. The installation window that appears briefly also looks very similar to the Office 2003 install window.
Ork.exe can be found on this page: http://www.microsoft.com/office/orkarchive/2003ddl.htm
I am running:
Lubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. 3.2.0-31-generic lxde 0.5.0-4ubuntu3 openbox 3.5.0-2ubuntu2 wine-1.5.14

Ork.exe the installer for the "custom installer" crashes

--- Comment #2 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com 2012-10-11 11:46:52 CDT --- Please install debug symbols or compile wine yourself and get a new log. In Ubuntu I think the package is called wine1.5-dbg.

--- Comment #3 from mikey abc.mikey@googlemail.com 2012-10-11 12:45:55 CDT --- Bruno Jesus, OK, will report back with results.
Although I will say that on a hunch I tried installing with this command:
wine "msiexec" /i "E:\PRO11.MSI"
This worked and installed Office Prof 2003.

Sorry it looks like installing wine1.5-dbg and wine1.5-dev didn't help with the backtrace.
I'm also unwilling to compile wine from source, while I provided a perfectly good link to a small download for testing this.

It's pointless to attach a backtrace from an _older_ Wine version (which also misses debug symbols).
A statement 'still present with Wine 1.7.x' is enough (report interval = 3-6 months).

Regression was introduced by wine-1.3.12-196-gd491346:
commit d49134686190c31d5054b6778ffe7af6d3b51bf8 Author: Hans Leidekker hans@codeweavers.com Date: Mon Jan 31 11:31:46 2011 +0100
mountmgr: Add a stub implementation of ioctl 0x560000.
Revert on top of wine-1.7.29 fixes the issue for Office 2003 installer and also for Ork.exe. One needs to be careful during the tests, because when installer crashes, wineserver keeps running and that can ruin looking for bad/good results.

--- Comment #21 from Wylda wylda@volny.cz --- Created attachment 49770 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=49770 Clean revert on top of wine-1.7.29
Commit above can't be cleanly reverted on top of wine-1.7.29. Slightly modified revert patch of that commit (differs in memset).

Still present in wine-1.7.46-193-g8b566b1.
Revert patch from Comment 21 still fixes the problem for "Office2003 Professional Edition". This bug would be nice candidate for wine 1.8.

--- Comment #26 from Wylda wylda@volny.cz --- I took the attached ORK.EXE and did the re-test under wine-1.8-rc2. Problem is still present.
Debian Jessie - ORK.EXE installer crashes, same trace as Focht's
Debian Stretch - ORK.EXE does not crash and _appears_ as installed
But in both distros following process hung indefinitely in the background: C:\users\p\Temp\IXP000.TMP\OSE.EXE -standalone

That would be wrong, as it would make bug 25478 regress.

--- Comment #28 from Hans Leidekker hans@meelstraat.net --- The ioctl appears to be part of a routine to determine what drive to cache the installation files on. Before this commit it fails to find one:
0009:Call msvcrt._vsnprintf(3003e258,00007fff,300070fc "failed to determine if drive was removable: %C",00329250) ret=3000f73a ... 0009:Call msvcrt._vsnprintf(3003e258,00007fff,30007734 "Couldn't determine what drive to cache on.",003298c4) ret=3000f73a
After this commit it finds a suitable drive:
0039:Call KERNEL32.WideCharToMultiByte(00000000,00000000,300070d8 L"Found NTFS drive.",ffffffff,0032124c,00008000,00000000,00000000) ret=3000fe52

--- Comment #29 from Hans Leidekker hans@meelstraat.net --- It depends on getting the right data from setupapi. It calls SetupDiGetClassDevsW with class GUID_DEVINTERFACE_DISK and then SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces. We don't store anything in the relevant registry keys so the enumeration fails immediately. However, the installer doesn't appear to check the return value.
If I put some fake data below these two keys the crash is gone: System\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceClasses System\CurrentControlSet\Enum

--- Comment #32 from pseud mstuff@read.org.nz --- (In reply to Hans Leidekker from comment #29) ...
If I put some fake data below these two keys the crash is gone: System\CurrentControlSet\Control\DeviceClasses System\CurrentControlSet\Enum
I have a number of 'System\CurrentControlSet's, here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet
Under which of the above should I put some date to avoid this crash?
thanks

It depends on getting the right data from setupapi.
What did you put in those keys? The uuid of the CDROM?
I am mounting an iso image of the installation disk and it won't install because of the "err:msi:msi_view_get_row Error fetching data for 1" problem.
I am using wine-2.9

I took the attached ORK.EXE and did the re-test under wine-3.2-167-g7be8beab68. Problem is still present.

--- Comment #35 from Linux User #330250 linuxuser330250@gmx.net --- I just installed Microsoft Office 2003 Professional (german, if that matters), System Builder (OEM, was sold separately in Europe, X11-45338) and it worked with the work-around suggested in Comment 18, for me:
$ WINEARCH="win32" WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine/Microsoft Office 2003" wine-staging "msiexec" /i "C:\INST\pro11n.msi"
(I copied the contents of the CD-ROM to $WINEPREFIX/drive_c/INST beforehand...)
I could then also apply Service Pack 3 (german), i.e. this one:
$ sha256sum Office2003SP3-KB923618-FullFile-DEU.exe 6768d79446f64970d68469341fe79ddd96b751ba22ffefba9652cdf6aa19c80b Office2003SP3-KB923618-FullFile-DEU.exe
Word, PowerPoint and Outllok run flawlessly AFAICS, but Excel has an issue with a plugin. I disabled it (as suggestes by Excel) and then it ran.
Activation over the Internet worked (I had startet WINWORD.EXE first, so this is when it was activated).
I used WINEARCH="win32" WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.wine/Microsoft Office 2003" wine-staging "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" on Gentoo to run Word 2003 and the other .EXEs respectively.
wine-staging is 3.7, Gentoo USE="X alsa capi cups custom-cflags fontconfig gecko gphoto2 gssapi jpeg kerberos lcms ldap mono mp3 ncurses nls openal opencl opengl osmesa pcap perl png pulseaudio realtime run-exes s3tc sdl ssl (staging) themes threads truetype udev udisks v4l vaapi vulkan xcomposite xml -dos -gsm -gstreamer -netapi -odbc -oss -pipelight -prelink -samba -scanner (-selinux) {-test} -xinerama" ABI_X86="32 64 (-x32)"
I could also install FileFormatConverters.exe (sha256sum: 31d0a693952474472887896d85f2ce55746b0c48f7bc6fae80386fc31ca0c290) and compatibilitypacksp3-kb2526297-fullfile-de-de.exe (sha356sum: 2142391adf38b12611a7e41d6a3cb9c3c5500ac5139b5380a302808d0b474d5c), but I don't know how I could install the other updates that came in .cab files, like excel_6b6c723f3a4be24058b0b8e73f671f5cbd1854bb.cab and so on...
I have a collection of those fixes from a WSUS Offline Update .iso I made a few years back, but I couldn't directly run UpdateInstaller.exe in Wine, because it quit right after opening the command prompt (cmd.exe). Maybe a script issue from wsusofflineupdate as it wasn't designed to run in Wine... OR I need to set the USE="dos" feature for wine-staging in Gentoo???

--- Comment #36 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
this was fixed by commit https://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/commitdiff/f848d03f95e9d4d722dd8ee86b... ("rpcrt4: Fix handling of FC_ALIGNM* directives.").
Part of Wine 3.21 release.
Thanks Zebediah.
The regression commit seems a bit fishy though. I guess adding a stub for IOCTL_VOLUME_GET_VOLUME_DISK_EXTENTS triggered a different code path in the installer which lead to another Wine insufficiency.
