Summary: Medieval 2: Total War: water covers the land Product: Wine Version: 0.9.50. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: knan-wine@anduin.net CC: stefan@codeweavers.com
Created an attachment (id=10575) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10575) screenshot, bad state
Seems like a z-order issue in rendering. In short, on the campaign map, where land should be rendered on top of the sea background, the sea is rendered instead. Fiddling around with in-game graphics settings or OffscreenRenderingMode doesn't change anything.
The demo doesn't have campaign mode, so no free download. Appdb comments seem to confirm the bug.

Reverting the commit fixes the issue for me with 0.9.54.

As well as the water covering the land, battles are unplayable for me with wine
0.9.49, due to graphics problems. I've assumed it's the same problem, because
it seemed they only occur together. Only a small patch of land is shown around the where the army would be deployed, and torches, if the army is holding them. Not the troops or most of the scenery or ground.

--- Comment #7 from Timo-Heikki Mäkelä imaxfun@gmail.com 2008-03-01 18:40:59 --- A patch from Roderick Colenbrander fixing some depth stencil stuff was committed four days ago. Could someone check, if that one fixed this in the GIT? My guess is not, as it's on none of the same files as the commit breaking here, though.

One-liner hack that fixes the issue for this game, but breaks the test suite and probably other games (since it returns the automatic depth stencil from GetDepthStencilSurface no matter what).
Does that give any hints about what the proper fix would be?

--- Comment #16 from Noah budious@gmail.com 2008-07-29 08:27:55 --- After testing the Steam distribution of Medieval II (version 1.03) in WINE 1.1.2, the issue is still present.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11445
--- Comment #17 from Jeffrey Jones jeff@jones.be 2008-08-17 05:32:53 --- One-liner hack fixes the water issue but the roads and borders still don't appear (Strangely for me, unless you are looking at a precise part of the map, center on castle Angers)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11445
--- Comment #18 from Stefan Dösinger stefandoesinger@gmx.at 2008-08-18 09:15:35 --- The hack is wrong, but there could be some call that is supposed to reset the depth stencil, e.g. IWineD3DDevice::Reset(but I think that handles it already).
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11445
--- Comment #19 from Noah budious@gmail.com 2008-08-24 14:55:03 --- I would like to report that as of WINE 1.1.3, the issue now appears to have reversed itself. The land textures are now visible, however, a sand texture now appears over the areas of the map that should be covered by water.

--- Comment #20 from knan-wine@anduin.net 2008-09-07 12:51:12 --- Yay! Main issue is fixed in 1.1.4. Water & land now keep to their proper places.
Comment 17 still applies, roads are mostly invisible but show up from some viewpoints when scrolling about. Rounding error? Better handled as a new bug, I suppose.
