--- Comment #1 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- Hi, could you also attach the console output please?
Also, google tells me this might be the app: https://ia803009.us.archive.org/2/items/CrocLegendOfTheGobbosWindows/Croc_Le...
That one installs fine here. If the app is free to download then please add downloadlink

--- Comment #2 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- That's a bit different to my version. I just tried the one in the link provided, and it worked; however I'm on a different PC (same distro and WINE version though). The version of the CD I have does not have the Croc 2 demo. I would have bought it not long after Croc's release.
I'm at my parents' house, so can't provide CLI output for my version right now.
Thanks for finding that other version and trying it out.

--- Comment #3 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Ah, and I've realised something else too. In the current test results, the submitter mentions:
I don't know why others say you have to install an alternate render... it might add something to the game but other than that vanilla works flawlessy out-of-the box and into the glass! Also I haven't noticed any problem with remembering key configuration.
It looks like they added D3D hardware acceleration in this version. In my copy of the game, it does not have D3D acceleration, only Glide, hence, why you need the Glide wrapper.
So, it appears that it's not just the installer that is newer.
I'll have a look into the differences between the two versions, when I get the time.

--- Comment #4 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Created attachment 66278 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=66278 _setup.exe (warn+all)
This is the CLI output that appears before the error message. Nothing appears after pressing OK.

--- Comment #5 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- (In reply to Chris Wyatt from comment #4)
Created attachment 66278 [details] _setup.exe (warn+all)
Hi , instead of warn+all it might be more useful to attach +relay,+seh log (bzipped2) and see what happens just before MessageBox is called

--- Comment #6 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- warn+relay+seh shows very little:
WINEDEBUG=warn+relay+seh wine _Setup.exe
002d:fixme:file:GetLongPathNameW UNC pathname L"\\?\D:\_Setup.exe"

warn+relay+seh shows very little:
WINEDEBUG=warn+relay+seh wine _Setup.exe
002d:fixme:file:GetLongPathNameW UNC pathname L"\\?\D:\_Setup.exe"
Can you please try with 5.0-rc5 or later? This looks like bug 48415.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #8 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Same error dialog appears with 5.0-rc5
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #9 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Just noticed with 5.0-rc5 (and possibly 5.0-rc4 too), if you run 'wine _Setup.exe', it returns exit status 53 (EBADR).
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #10 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- Still might be an idea to attach +relay,+seh (notice the comma, otherwise no output at all i guess)
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #11 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Apologies. No CLI output at all with 5.0-rc5.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #12 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Also tried with 5.0-rc6. Same results as rc5:
WINEDEBUG=warn+relay,+seh wine _Setup.exe
Disregard my comment about the exit status. It returns 0. I think I may have got confused looking back through my terminal history.

Apologies. No CLI output at all with 5.0-rc5.
WINEDEBUG=+relay,+seh
should give tons of output....

I extracted last 1500 lines before messagebox. This is 16 bit app then right?
I don`t know what`s wrong, but afaict there seems to be a suspicious thing that it cannot find version info size of gdi.exe becuase of not being able to load gdi.exe (error 000000c1 seems to be ERROR_BAD_EXE_FORMAT). ????
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #17 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Yes, that jumped out at me. I did try installing 'gdiplus' and 'gdiplus_winxp' with winetricks, but this did not make any difference and the error was still the same.
Yes, it probably is 16-bit. A lot of these old installers are 16-bit, even if the things they install are 32-bit. This isn't the first time I've had trouble with very old installers in WINE. This is a very early game that came out around 97.
Just to clarify, this is from rc5 (I've been jumping between versions). I accidentally built rc5 again when I thought I'd build rc6. I'm in the middle of building rc6 at the moment, but nothing in the changelogs jumps out at me, as being able to solve this problem.
I do at least have a workaround, which is the newer version that Louis Lenders linked to. It appears to be running perfectly, but I still need to spend some more time to be sure.
I'm particularly dippy today, because I've got the flu, so bear with me if I make any more silly mistakes!

--- Comment #18 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Well I was the maintainer of Croc, and now it seems I'm not. Anyone I can contact to find out why?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #19 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- NVM. It looks like I got kicked out by an automated system. That's a bit annoying.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #20 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- Hi, any chance you could try this in wine-4.0 by downgrading?
A likely similar bug has been filed with the same error, and for me that installer starts fine in wine-4.0 bit gives an error like you have in recent wine. See https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48557

--- Comment #21 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- I'm quite sure it is a regression, but when it regressed, I cannot say. It's been a long time since I've tried this game in WINE.
I'll try and find some time next week to test this with WINE 4.0.

--- Comment #22 from Louis Lenders xerox.xerox2000x@gmail.com --- Created attachment 66380 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=66380 revert of commit
Hi Chris,
I'll try and find some time next week to test this with WINE 4.0.
On second thought probably handier to try attached patch (that reverts a commit) , applied on current wine . If that gets the installer going then we also know this is same issue as in bug 48557 (https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48557)
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #23 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- Thanks Louis. It looks like that was the same bug. Croc setup is now running fine with wine-5.1-112-g9642f35922, with the patch; however I've not yet the same Wine version without the patch.
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48457
--- Comment #24 from Chris Wyatt wyattmeister@gmail.com --- I just tried the same WINE version without the patch, and got the error again.

Thanks Louis. It looks like that was the same bug. Croc setup is now running fine with wine-5.1-112-g9642f35922, with the patch; however I've not yet the same Wine version without the patch.
Ok then it`s really the same issue as expected.
If you don`t mind I resolve this one as duplicate of bug 48557 because that one has a downloaded.
You`ll be added automatically to that bugreport so receive notifications once that bug is fixed/progressed.
