Summary: Photoshop CS2: Typing causes excessive processor use and brief unresponsiveness Product: Wine Version: 1.0.0 Platform: Other OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: login@greenstorm.net
Open Photoshop CS2. Open an image Press T to select the typing tool. Click. Type quickly.
Watch your system monitor's CPU usage leap all over the place. If you type the right speed, photoshop doesn't get a chance to update the image with your text, and the cursor moves with nothing appearing behind it. All the text pops in at once when your CPU gets a chance to breathe.
Hit CTRL-Enter to finish typing. Press V to select the movement tool. Press the down arrow to move the text box incrementally.
Watch your system monitor's CPU usage leap all over the place. Let go of down, and watch all the cached keystrokes keep your text box sliding off the edge of your image.
In Windows, as soon as you let go of the arrow keys, the object stops moving. In Windows, when you type, text appears immediately on the image. In Windows, typing doesn't take a bunch of CPU time.

--- Comment #1 from Eric Carter login@greenstorm.net 2008-09-11 12:28:52 --- Oh, BTW. I'm pretty sure I saw the same behavior in 1.1.4, but someone with 1.1.4 install should confirm that.

--- Comment #2 from Dmitry Timoshkov dmitry@codeweavers.com 2008-09-12 00:43:23 --- Probably a bottleneck caused by the missing DIB engine, same as the bug 12650, but without losing the key events.

--- Comment #3 from Eric Carter login@greenstorm.net 2008-10-15 15:13:36 --- It looks like the processor usage has gone down in 1.1.6, but it's still much higher than it should be.

--- Comment #4 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-04-17 12:19:29 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.19 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #5 from Eric Carter login@greenstorm.net 2009-04-17 14:17:33 --- In 1.1.18 I barely noticed this bug, so it showed some improvement by then.
1.1.19 shows significant improvement over 1.1.19 and I can't reproduce the delay in characters displaying typing as fast as I can (and I type pretty fast), but my CPU monitor shows a noticeable increase in CPU usage.
In 1.1.19, when I pound multiple keys as fast as I can, I can still max out the core that wine is running on, and the displayed characters lag behind the input.
So it's good enough for me, but users with a slower processor may still be experiencing it.
I have a Core2Duo running somewhere around 2.33 ghz. I don't recall completely, but it might be an E2700. Not a new chip by any means, but certainly well above the recommended system requirements for CS2.

Err... I meant to say "1.1.19 shows significant improvement over 1.1.18"

--- Comment #7 from Eric Carter login@greenstorm.net 2009-04-17 16:26:08 --- Oh, and the text display delay still crops up often enough to be annoying when other apps are using a fair amount of my CPU.
Good work to whoever's improving this. I appriciate it, but there's still a bit more work to be done.
