Summary: Starcraft 2: Broken Sound Product: Wine Version: 1.3.20 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: mmdevapi AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: aeneas@q-mail.me
Since wine 1.3.19 the sound in StarCraft 2 as well as in other games (see comments from http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=20882 ) is very broken. It has a lot of glitches and crashes very often. If it crashes, I have to select another Sound Device in the StarCraft settings to enable the sound again. Pre 1.3.19 using a mmdevapi override (disabled) was enough to enable sound.
I report this using ALSA as my sound driver. eSound actually works pretty well but has a latency of about 0.6 - 0.8 seconds which is very anoying

--- Comment #5 from Maarten Lankhorst m.b.lankhorst@gmail.com 2011-05-31 06:57:12 CDT --- There appears to be 2 bugs. 1 is fixed with alsa-plugins.git and is caused by underruns, the other I haven't isolated yet, but seems to mostly appear when switching devices.

--- Comment #6 from Ema ema.oriani@gmail.com 2011-05-31 07:33:46 CDT --- Out of curiosity, will this alsa-plugin fix available with next wine release? Cheers

--- Comment #7 from Maarten Lankhorst m.b.lankhorst@gmail.com 2011-05-31 07:40:43 CDT --- As far as I can tell, it's not a wine bug. Alsa-plugins has its own git tree which you need to compile for 32-bits, not part of wine.

--- Comment #8 from machete aeneas@q-mail.me 2011-05-31 11:40:22 CDT --- I did compile alsa-plugins.git and did a alsa force-reload (no reboot til now) and everything seems to be back to normal again. I will report again if I find any issues, maybe after rebooting or so
cheers

--- Comment #9 from Maarten Lankhorst m.b.lankhorst@gmail.com 2011-05-31 12:03:13 CDT --- Probably not a wine bug, a patch should get in that should help though, I might raise another bug report for it.

--- Comment #11 from machete aeneas@q-mail.me 2011-06-09 04:30:58 CDT --- unfortunately there are still problems with the sound. At first it seemed to work but it seems as if the problem is still there (choppy sound & crashes). tested in 1.3.21

--- Comment #13 from peque_msl@hotmail.com 2011-12-28 16:32:33 CST --- I do confirm the same issue with StarCraft II "Wings of Liberty" and Wine.
Description of problem: After a few minutes of playing, the sound disappears. When you launch the application for the first time after starting your session, the sound may or may not work (many times it is working but making more noise than sound...). Anyway, after some minutes, the sound is always gone for me.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Happens in Wine 1.3.33, but did happen too in 1.3.29, which was the last version I was using. [*]
How reproducible: Just launch the application and wait some time.
Additional info: I've attached 3 Wine logs that may content information about the issues with the sound.
[*] UPDATE: happens in 1.3.35 as well.
