Summary: pixel shader does not work after update Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc2 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: michael-shz@web.de
I used wine version 9.44 as provided with OpenSuse 10.3 (32 bit). For the graphic card (NVidia GeForce 7900) the latest NVidia driver 169.12-0.1 was used. 3 D graphic worked fine. Compiz was not installed.
Then I installed "Vampire-Bloodlines" with the latest patches. And it was mostly playable.
After updating to version 1.0 RC 2, I get a nearly black screen directly after starting that game. Light sources are hardly recognizable. Everything else is pitch black.
There is not warning or error message logged into the console.
When I disable the "pixel shader" with winecfg, the screen is once again o.k. There are still some some minor atrifacts, probably due to the missing shader.
To make it short: The support of the pixel shader seems to be broken somewhere between 9.44 and 1.0 RC 2.

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-05-27 16:45:25 --- Probably a duplicate of one of the recent d3d regressions. Please run a regression test:

--- Comment #2 from Michael Scholz michael-shz@web.de 2008-06-14 08:36:23 --- I cannot compile wine with openGL support. The configuration indicates a missing libGL (which certainly is there). Within the config.log I find "/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLcore.so.1: undefined reference to `_nv000042gl'". I do not know how to continue from here, therefore I cannot perform a regression test.
The bug has not been fixed at least the current RC 5.

--- Comment #3 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2008-06-28 08:58:35 --- I think I'm hitting the same problem.
I made two screeenshots. One displaying the main menu right after starting the game. This screenshot is black apart from menu items the mouse cursor is pointing at. These items are illuminated, so you can see what you're pointing at (and selecting).
If I start a new game and wait until I get in-game (the pseudo tutorial part) and I press ESC I end up in the game menu, now displaying completly fine (second screenshot).
I try to do a regression test, usually this works on my system.
Cheers, Tobias

notice that now everything looks time it should selecting menu items still illuminates them, but the the surroundings are visible as well

--- Comment #6 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2008-06-28 12:24:34 --- Gone back to wine-0.9.44 and the problem also appears there.
Disabling pixel shaders in winecfg works, but I dunno how much influence on the grapics quality this has.
Graphics hardware is a nvidia geforce FX 5900, with nvidia-drivers-100.14.19.

--- Comment #7 from Michael Scholz michael-shz@web.de 2008-07-07 02:20:27 --- The influence of a disabled pixel shader is that objects like paintings appear black. The most obvious object was the entrance sign of the "Skyline Apartment".
The game worked with wine as distributed with OpenSuse 10.3. I am not 100% sure if it was wine 9.44 as I recognized the error only after updating.

--- Comment #8 from Adrian Lüthi adi.l@bluewin.ch 2008-11-28 02:51:24 --- There is no regression around.
Vampire Bloodlines does not work well with GLSL, and as GLSL was activated with wine 9.49, it looks like there was a regression in the game, but when you deactivate GLSL everything is fine again.
Also without GLSL the framerate is almost twice :)
I described the same in bug 15562.

--- Comment #10 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-04-16 16:01:05 --- Currently using wine-1.1.18 and I can no longer reproduce the black-screen-in-mainmenu problem. I haven't played very far, but the game looks quite good so far.
No visual errors, framerate is good and no obvious errors on the console.
Using the same old nVidia GeforceFX 5900, with GLSL enabled and FBO OffscreenRenderingMode.
@Adrian: Can you possibly retest this on your system? To me this looks kinda FIXED.
I noticed that you're the maintainer of Bloodlines. Could you possibly remove a buglink? I doubt bug #219 is any longer valid for Bloodlines. I have a original copy of the game and it works smooth without any crack. In fact, the crack makes the game crash early. So I just ripped my disc and I'm now playing the cdemu emulating a virtual drive. That makes no trouble at all.

--- Comment #11 from Adrian Lüthi adi.l@bluewin.ch 2009-04-16 16:23:35 --- I also get no black screen anymore, but the startmenu looks now a bit garbled on start. So i would also think that this bug is fixed. Especially as GLSL on or of does no longer make a difference in the menu.
About the crack, i still need one to start the game.

--- Comment #12 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-04-16 16:40:26 --- Hmmm, I have the DVD version of the game. I think there is also a CD version, which one do you have?
I just tried installing the community patchset (version 6.0) but now the game fails like previously with the crack applied. I get the "debugger detected" message but can still enter the game after confirming the messagebox. I get the messagebox again when loading a game, or starting a new one. Again I can confirm the box, but it crashes shortly afterwards.
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x20095ef1 (thread 001e), starting debugger...
Probably the community patch replaces some DLLs with unpacked ones.

--- Comment #13 from Tobias Jakobi liquid.acid@gmx.net 2009-04-26 10:41:32 --- Right, I've just reinstalled the whole game - this time backing up the original vampire.exe and vampire.dll (after patching to 1.2).
Installed the fanpatch version 6.0 and replaced the new vampire.dll with the original one. Dunno how much functionality of 6.0 is going away by doing that, but now it works.
I think I report this one FIXED.
Note that I don't have any visuals erors either in the game or in the menu.
