Bug ID: 38665 Summary: Toontown Rewritten Launcher under Wine/FreeBSD gives "ValueError: Empty certificate data" Product: Wine Version: 1.7.43 Hardware: x86 OS: FreeBSD Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: secur32 Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: neel@neelc.org
Created attachment 51591 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=51591 Toontown Rewritten Log FIle with "ValueError: Empty certificate data" Error
Hi, I am attempting to run a game called Toontown Rewritten (https://www.toontownrewritten.com/) on Wine under FreeBSD 10.1 64-bit.
In the past, I was able to run Toontown Rewritten under Wine/FreeBSD quite well, but am unable to run it now, especially with their "Launcher". When I attempt to log in, I get a "ValueError: Empty certificate data" error from Toontown Rewritten's launcher. The log file is attached to this report.
I attempted to contact Toontown Rewritten's support, but they said "we do not support FreeBSD". I did expect that, considering that hardly anyone uses FreeBSD on the desktop. I don't know any other FreeBSD user personally (I even met a Linux kernel developer, but never met a FreeBSD user!).
I don't know if using Linux would help, because on Xubuntu 15.04, the launcher's GUI didn't even come up if I use Toontown Rewritten under Wine.
And while Toontown Rewritten has a Linux launcher and FreeBSD has Linux emulation, Toontown Rewritten has a 64 bit Linux launcher and FreeBSD's Linux emulation is 32-bit, so that's a no-go.
What is a solution/workaround for this problem?
Thanks, Neel Chauhan --- https://www.neelc.org/

In the past, I was able to run Toontown Rewritten under Wine/FreeBSD quite well, but am unable to run it now
The same version of the application? Can it still be run on an older version of Wine? If so a regression test will be needed to narrow down the cause. http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
Is the game freely available for download?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38665
--- Comment #2 from Neel Chauhan neel@neelc.org --- The problem is not Wine. I had this issue on older versions of Wine as well. I did not have this problem historically with Version 1.2.0 of Toontown Rewritten's Launcher, but after they updated their servers, Version 1.2.0 stopped working even if I am on Windows, and Version 1.2.1 under Wine has been giving this "Empty certificate data" error.
By the way, this game is freely available. The URL is: https://www.toontownrewritten.com/ . It does require a sign up, though.

--- Comment #3 from Neel Chauhan neel@neelc.org --- To clarify, this is an online game. In the past, it has worked under Wine, so it's older version has worked in the past but doesn't now, after they made changes to their server configuration.
And the newer version gives the "Empty Certificate data". This problem isn't just related to Toontown Rewritten. I found another website where the same error has occurred as well with another application under Wine: http://drachenjaeger.eu/vintel/vintel.html
It seems to be an error with Wine, Python, and the so-called "environment".
Is there a solution/workaround to this?

--- Comment #4 from Neel Chauhan neel@neelc.org --- So it seems this IS a problem with Wine.

I don't expect any sane application to bail out when a SOCK_SEQPACKET does not work. I'll try the app when I have more time.

--- Comment #11 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- I'm not able to agree with the site rules to download the game (site displays system error), will try again other day.

--- Comment #12 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- I tried running the game multiple times, I could see the GUI once and in all other attempts the GUI didn't show up or there was a random crash in the console. Whenever I start the Launcher the console shows messages about files 1 to 31 being updated and that is all. Since the game downloaded a lot of files in the first time it was run I don't think this is related to winsock.
