--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-03-24 19:51:47 CDT --- I also see a crash on startup here, though my log looks a bit different:
err:d3d:resource_init Out of memory! err:d3d9:device_parent_CreateSurface (0x16188c) CreateSurface failed, returning 0x8876017c fixme:d3d_texture:texture_init Failed to create surface 0x42e7508, hr 0x8876017c Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x005bbad4). Backtrace: =>0 0x005bbad4 in backtothefuture101 (+0x1bbad4) (0x01cf7020)
Workaround for me: winetricks d3dx9_36 With that, the game is quite playable.
Does that workaround work for you, too?

--- Comment #7 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-04-20 16:45:55 CDT --- Funny output messages from wine are not bugs. If the game misbehaves (rather than just outputs funny stuff to log) once you do 'winetricks d3dx9_36', please file a new bug.

I have all d3dx9s installed c/o directx9 to cover all issues that may present itself over many apps I run.

--- Comment #10 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2012-08-10 05:12:32 CDT --- Is this still an issue? Does native d3dx9_36 still solve the problem? If that's the case, please attach a +d3dx log with wine's builtin d3dx9_36.dll.

I tested the game (BttF: Episode 1) with Wine 1.5.10, using only built-in d3dx dlls. The game no longer crashes, but visuals aren't quite correct with the built-in d3dx9_36 (see attached screenshot). Native d3dx9_36 corrects the issue for me. I don't see any related d3dx messages in the terminal with current Wine.

Fixed then. The broken rendering is a new bug.
